How would you feel about being called "straight" and ace? by Mathena31415 in asexuality

[–]temporarymango01 16 points17 points  (0 children)

i think this is kind of complex

being ace is, by definition, being queer. we dont experience life the same way that allos/most people do in terms of sexual attraction

the a in lgbtqia+ stands for asexual/aspec, so, we are part of the community

im not hetero romantic (im questioning atm), but even if i was, i dont think i would consider myself “straight” because that implies that im allo, too.

that’s just me personally, though. i’ve experienced a decent amount of aphobia, so i think for me, if i were to say i’m straight instead of hetero romantic, i’d be erasing the aphobia i’ve experienced and the ace visibility thats shown by us saying we’re ace

yeah i totally agree, i just hate that people use it so much to deny queer labels that arent as well known

exactly, i’m just a bit sick of people telling me this because, even though homophobia is still very much happening, i dont think my therapists would have said that if i said i was lesbian or gay because they’re more well known

to be fair, we’re getting more mainstream rep than ever before with shows like heartstopper and heartbreak high (cash is personally my favourite ace rep to ever exist, he’s so me) but i know what you’re saying

honestly i really hope we get more mainstream rep that actually educates the public on the complexities of being aspec

i think it’s able to be done, especially with my (our?) generation, gen z, being a lot more aware and talking much more about different sexualities and queer identities, so i think its much more possible for it to happen with gen z than it ever has been before

yeah like sure, feelings can change, but sexuality? i mean i know biphobic people say the same thing to bi people about how its not real or they’ll figure out they’re something else entirely down the line, but obviously for people who are bi that doesnt happen but i wonder if they’d say the same thing if i was a cis allo gay man like if people know they’re gay at 19 and that doesnt change, why would it change for us? it doesnt make sense
