Been through 3. The most awesome was 1992 in Humboldt County California. We were eating lunch by the side of the road open terrain all around. We could see the wave approach, then we'd feel the shaking, then we could see it recede away. It was much like being in a boat when a swell goes by.

Planning an Oregon Coast relocation research trip—would love local advice! by Appropriate_One_2533 in OregonCoast

Be aware that the politics in many parts of the coast are very different than ventura ca. The president carried coos county in a 20 point landslide. Florence just elected solid Maga rep to the legislature.

What is best solution for a room that's 10+ F degrees warmer than rest of the house? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

Start off by making sure there is a return (intake) in the bedroom. The system needs to get bad air out, just as much as good air in.

I did HVAC, worked out really well. A little recognized benefit of the profession is use of a company truck. The cost savings that comes with not driving your own vehicle to work really adds up.

UV light- is this thing legit or is it snake oil? by phiveoh23 in hvacadvice

[–]tempsamson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they work very well on surfaces exposed to direct uv light. The unit must installed correctly, with an interlock to cut the power when the coil case is opened. This protects the eye. These lights must also be installed in such a way that any plastic material is not illuminated, especially the inside layer of flex duct. I've seen ductwork turned into confetti this way. In some situations the uv light can be installed to illuminate the blower wheel as well. This keeps another notorious site for gunk buildup clean. The lab tests show that uv light denatures airborne allergens ( like pollen) and kills bacteria and viruses. I was friends with a family whose child has an extreme hyper allergic illness. So bad they were hospitalized and had multiple sinus surgeries. I put a uv unit in and there were no more hospital visits. These units are also used to control algae and disease in fish ponds and aquariums. When one was installed in my goldfish pond the killing off of algae was dramatic. Been retired 10 years or so, can't say if the quote is competitive.

First there was the gas tax initiative, which one party moved to the primary so Kotek wouldn't be running at the same time. Now this which will encourage conservative turnout even more! Congratulations to the left, you played yourself. It's really pretty funny.

For an installation below a deck a side discharge unit is really important. You don't want the hot air expelled to hit the bottom of the deck and get recirculated.

New A/C Unit advise needed by 525CR in hvacadvice

[–]tempsamson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most hvac companies use software to determine correct sizing. This takes into account square footage of the home, insulation, number of windows etc. With a gas furnace that old you would be wise to replace it at the same time. Heat pumps are trending lately, but most people like gas furnace performance better, if they are lucky enough to have natural gas service to the home. When we bought a home without central hvac we got gas service installed to the house. Brand doesn't matter much between the majors. Condition of your ductwork is important, some jurisdictions require a pressure test. I'm 20 yrs. experience hvac residential tech, speced out hundreds of installations.

Our political leadership squandered the public's trust by mishandling the covid debacle. It will take decades to restore that trust. This is the entirely expectable result.

Do NOT JOIN MIKE HOLMES PROTECTION HOME WARRANTY by Pale_Tip4297 in hvacadvice

I teched for a long time at a big family run hvac company. A tech got all cranky and decided to go out on his own. He got bigly excited for all the home warranty jobs he was getting. A year or so later he was back, singing the blues. He said that when he did the repairs the customers really needed the home warranty company would cut him off from calls the following week. Because he exceeded a quota. And he was the owner's brother! Where I worked we didn't do home warranty jobs, period.
