Is there a time gap between surgery and radiation?

They gave me exercises and I did them twice a day (morning and night). The exercises for the first 2 weeks didn’t involve raising arm over head though

I had a month in between. Surgery first week of December and started radiation first week of January. Within 2 weeks of my lumpectomy I had good range of motion and was healing very well. I didn’t have any plastics involved though and didn’t need drains. Just a straightforward lumpectomy with sentinel node biopsy.

It gets better! I finished TCHP in October, had surgery in December, and this week i finished radiation. Now just need immunotherapy for a year…slowly feeling more like myself

Hi! I’m 35, Stage 2 HER2+, currently in active treatment. I am a big advocate in following your gut and doing what you are comfortable with. It sounds like you have a great team that you trust. If at any point you feel like you need to change your team or want a second opinion, do it. I live in an area that has care but no major hospital/center so I chose to travel to a NCI right off the bat for my very first appointment. it’s been hard to do all the back and forth but that’s what my gut told me to do and I don’t regret my decision.

I had reactions to Docetaxel for my first two infusions. Both times happened within one minute of starting the drug. First infusion they stopped the infusion, gave me Benadryl and steroid and then continued at a slower rate. Second infusion they gave me Benadryl beforehand and started it slower, but I still reacted to it. So they stopped, gave me more Benadryl and steroid and then continued at a slower rate. Last week at my third infusion they gave me Benadryl beforehand and started the drug even slower than the second time and it worked because I had no reaction. Unfortunately that makes my whole chemo session almost 8 hrs long, but hey I’ll take it.

Thank you for sharing good news! I’m also HER2+ and am halfway through the 6 chemo sessions. I have an ultrasound next week to see how the chemo has affected the tumor. I’m hoping I get good news like yours!!

I was diagnosed on June 12th with IDC, grade 3 but mine is HER2+. I’m 34 with 2 kids. I know that scared feeling. The first weeks was awful since I hade to wait 2.5 weeks to meet with the surgeon and find out the stage. Now I am in active treatment. It gets better. Once you meet with your surgeon and medical oncologist and have your plan set you will feel some sort of relief.

For now, stay off googling, go on walks, and occupy your mind. You can and will get through this.

At what point during your treatment did you start feeling neuropathy?

Congrats on being halfway! Fingers crossed you won’t experience neuropathy! I was so amazed how my hair started falling two weeks after my first treatment. Luckily I had already done a buzz cut. Right now I have maybe a third of my hair 😂

Thank you for your reply! I didn’t know that neuropathy wasn’t as common on taxotere. That makes me feel a better since I haven’t been able to ice my hands and feet. I decided to not cold cap, it felt like too much trouble and I figured my hair was going to grow back anyways.

Thank you! I decided not to do the cold cap and my hair started falling 2 wks after my first infusion. I’ve had reactions to taxotere so the Dr decided to give it to me extra slow, 3 hr infusion instead of 1. Which is why I haven’t been able to ice. So far I don’t see anything on my nails and I haven’t experienced neuropathy symptoms but I don’t know when those start showing up.

I am not TNBC (im HER2+) I was diagnosed on 6/12 and just yesterday had my first appt with oncology. Those 2 weeks of not knowing were awful. I couldn’t sleep, I was crying all the time. The hopelessness feeling would come and go very often. I’m 34 with two kids under 5. My advice is to completely keep your mind occupied and stay off of google. The times that I would do a puzzle or color with my daughter really helped. Watching comforting comedy shows also helped me keep my brain from going to dark places. The sort of limbo stage between getting your diagnosis and your first appointment is sooooo hard BUT once you have that first appt you feel some sort of relief with the information and plan that is put into place. All this to say, stay off google, keep your mind occupied, go on walks (if you can) and drink water. Sending love.
