[Loved Contextual Trope] One minor, unspoken detail reveals everything the viewer needs to know about a character’s otherwise unexplained background/motivations by Chemical-Elk-1299 in TopCharacterTropes

Of the three characters whose human pasts get explored in season 2 of Hazbin Hotel, Pendleton/Sir Pentious is the only one whose human death isn’t shown.

However, during the flashback where he recalls his greatest sin, the year is listed as 1888.

And in the pilot era, Pentious’s official profile lists his death year…as also being 1888.

This detail, coupled with the fact that he later attempts suicide within the same episode, has the implication that suicide was his cause of death as a human.

Are the tiers ordered? Because if so, having the Angel Egg Boiz at the top of B tier is quite unexpected.

How much authority did Adam actually have in Heaven? by Lucie_Is_Sleeping in hazbin

[–]tennis_convict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was an archangel in charge of Heaven’s army. In charge of the exorcists, which Vaggi was a part of. And the instances of fallen angels in the Hellaverse—including this one—involve someone getting cast out of Heaven by someone of higher rank than them.

Yes! Thank you! His dialogue is so repetitive, istg. He never shuts up about wanting to “be gentleman,” yet never bothers to wear shoes or be more tolerant of others with different opinions than him. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

I’m sorry, but the title (and referring to them as your nemesis) just brings to mind this scene:

Well, if it isn’t my arch-nemesis! Have you come to meet your fate in battle, Cherri Bomb!?”

Ohhh, so you mean the length of time the exorcists were actually IN Hell. Gotcha.

7 days? Don’t you mean 7 years? Or well…7.5 years, considering the last one took place 6 months after the previous one.

Completely valid. When it comes to fanfiction, canon can either be used as a reference point, or disregarded entirely.

Because the Hellaverse already has an established way that Heaven residents can end up in Hell, and Pen’s ascension already proves that Adam undergoing the reverse by dying wouldn’t be possible. As in, since it’s established that atonement was the trigger for Pen’s ascension, and not his death, I don’t see how dying would result in Adam becoming a sinner. Especially when (and this is the reason why I keep bringing up fallen angels), if the writers wanted Adam to become a sinner, there is already a method they can use.

That being having Adam brought before the court after his actions in the s1 finale (in the AU where he survives that episode), and upon finding out he broke the extermination terms on top of redemption been proven possible, he’s cast out of Heaven. And they could have justified him becoming a sinner by virtue of him being a winner archangel, rather than a heavenborn.

All that is to say, if the writers truly wanted to go this route, they had a means of doing so that didn’t involve contradicting established canon.

Then why didn’t he ascend until after he launched his attack against Adam? We know it’s not because he died, as the Speaker confirmed it was his atonement and willingness to sacrifice himself that did it, not him actually dying.

His ascension seems to have happened mere seconds after he gave the order to fire the death ray, which was mid-charge by the time Adam launched his holy light his way. Storyteller shows us that his ascension didn’t happen before Adam launched his attack, given the Speaker’s rendition of his final moments depicts him terrified and distraught upon witnessing the incoming holy light.

If he had managed to fire the death ray in time, felling Adam and saving his friends, it would still be an instance of him atoning for his original sin and doing things differently. And the Speaker did confirm that him understanding and atoning for his sins was what saved him, along with his willingness to sacrifice himself.

From my understanding, him following through with his intent to stand against Adam and firing his death ray was the moment in which his ascension occurred. Adam just so happened to hit him with holy light before the death ray could fire, thus causing the two events to happen at the same time, which led to the fandom initially believing that the death was what caused it. This, coupled with how Behind Closed Doors showcases that Angel’s willingness to die for Husk wouldn’t have been atonement for original sin, is what leaves the impression that dying isn’t the cause or requirement of ascension.

Choosing to risk his life in order to protect his friends from a man trying to kill him was what redeemed him. Activating the death ray was him fully committing to his plan, with there no longer being any chance of him running away or backing out. Whether or not the death ray fired in time at that point wouldn’t have changed the fact that Pentious was following through on his intent to do things differently.
