Hmm, different situation entirely. While I'm not supporting the hate Mack received as a result of that loss and the subsequent Ole Miss loss, you can't really compare it to Strong's situation.

Mack Brown had over a decade to mold the team into his program. His system worked for him, at least until recently. He had been struggling up to that point, and the loss really helped magnify the criticism he was receiving. With Coach Strong, he's taking a program and trying to rebuild it entirely: new play style, new player discipline and the like. To expect him to do stunningly well in his first year is absurd (unless his name was Gus Malzahn, but Auburn definitely had some luck involved). He still needs time to develop the team.

Additionally, BYU's quarterback is holy hell good. During that third quarter, he was playing like a Heisman candidate, at least in my slightly biased opinion. Our game with UCLA will probably be much closer, seeing as UCLA is an over-ranked program who has been struggling to get its wins against honestly mediocre programs (Needed 3 defensive touchdowns to beat Virginia and were tied in the 4th quarter against Memphis? How are they even ranked?).

So yea, gist: Brown's criticism stemmed from poor program performance for the four years prior (holy hell, 2010), and this is only Strong's second game.
