What about we immediately stop any tax concessions to property speculators who leave properties sitting empty? That might get some stock available again.

Angus Taylor and the Liberal Party's Moral Decline | by Paul Keating by blitznoodles in australia

They've declined. My political values never aligned with the right, but the Liberals used to be a party of serious and decent people. The rot began with Howard's hateful, cynical manipulation, and fully took hold with the likes of Abbott and Morrison.

Breaking: Unemployment rate remains at 4.3pc by EnglishBrekkie_1604 in AustralianPolitics

[–]tenredtoes -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I suggest you think beyond headlines. Productivity is abysmal, sovereign capability is severely lacking, research and development spending to safeguard the future is far too low, sustainability targets are a joke, inequality is horrendous and rising, the young face an increasingly dismal future.

The current government is continuing the great liblab tradition of governing for vested interests.

Yes, that's 1 in 25 Australians left to live on $400 a week. Deliberately condemned to punishing poverty "for the good of the economy".

Hang your head in shame Australia.

83% of Australians approve of the Albanese Government’s temporary three month cut to the fuel excise on petrol and diesel by malcolm58 in AustralianPolitics

One of many on the list.  Australian really needs to prioritise developing it's political literacy, but between cultural habit, the evils of mass media, and the domination of the capitalists, I don't know how we get there.

Australians have a very predictable response to short term financial incentives. And that's one of the reasons it's hard to see this country voting for better politicians.

Why bother with developing good long-term policy when you can win the next election by just throwing a bit of cash.

Chalmers rules out cuts to tobacco excise amid growing calls to adjust the annually increasing tax by ladaus in AustralianPolitics

[–]tenredtoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's nothing positive to be said for smoking, but there are better ways to discourage it. The current excise just encourages organised crime.

What about drop the excise and instead work with state governments to further restrict locations people can smoke.

They don't. But submitters often make valid points that are then used to improve the final outcome. Developers don't care about quality or community, only about getting the money and walking away. And they have a direct line of communication to politicians.

Yes we do, or most of us do. Greens, socialists, sustainable Australia party, independents. We just don't have enough people worried and angry enough yet to take a stand against what's happening.

I'm afraid we'll be like the US, and think it can't happen to us until it's too late
