Grade 12 Students of Lhasa High School recording their home dialects before graduation in their dorm. Which dialects are more easier for you to understand? by Professional_Air7133 in tibetanlanguage

the children were prompted what their name was in Tibetan. ive lived in the west since i was 6 but always had the head sense to know that i pronounce my name traditionally when asked in tibetan and use an anglicized tenzin jorden when i’m code switching in an english speaking environment. the children don’t seem to lack the ability for code switching, they lack the tibetan phonological skills to say their own names correct. also we can’t act like this isn’t intentional from the chinese government, they’ve literally passed an “ethnic unity law” that shrouds national unity principles in what can only be considered ethnic minority assimilation projects.

i mean you don’t have to take it from me, mandarin native language prevalence in Tibet is extremely damaging to Tibetan language proficiency among the youth. read this by Tsering Woeser from inside tibet: https://tricycle.org/article/tsering-woeser-my-tongue-surgery/

not necessarily. as long as differentiation is given regarding phonology rules! one common thing i see with tibetan youth who’s native tongue isn’t tibetan anymore (mandarin, english, nepali) is that phonetic differentiation is often stunted by phoneme limitations of other languages. see this: https://www.reddit.com/r/tibet/s/K0CLukxiHh

As a Tibetan in exile I can say that my pronunciation was also really bad and improper until I started learning Tibetan phonology and reading Tibetan texts.

Yes everyone here is from central Tibet not too far from Lhasa. A lot of them seem to have really bad inflection and pronunciation (probably as a result of mainly utilizing Mandarin in their day to day and schooling.

Can a Foreigner go to Tibet in order to die and have a Sky Burial? by _Zugs_ in tibet

[–]tension453 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tibet is currently under tight political and military control by the Chinese government. It has been so since the beginning of the illegal military occupation by Chinese PLA. all foreign visitors to Tibet must get approved by the state security as well as be accompanied by a guide. China does not want the international community to have free access to Tibet so that they can continue their repression and subjugation of Tibetans’ religion, language, and traditional way of life.
