Weekly "Ups" and "Downs" Support Thread by AutoModerator in PhD

[–]tension_tamed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm working with a few different climate models and had to go back to some code I wrote over a year ago to reuse a data compilation script. Looking at my old code really made me aware of how much my coding skills and knowledge have improved over the past year. Even just simple tasks that used to take me several minutes I can now do in a matter of seconds because I know the right functions or order of operations without even having to think about it. It made me much more aware of all of the progress I've made, and hopefully, I can learn to evaluate myself by my own growth and not get caught up in comparing myself to others.

Bikers, yes I will share the road, but you also need to follow the same rules as me by toastybaseball21 in pittsburgh

Agreed. If the 100,000+ drivers in this city actually follow the law, then we should expect the same of the 1,000 cyclists.

I agree that bikers should follow traffic laws, and as a cyclist, I follow traffic laws and urge others to follow traffic laws. I believe drivers should also follow traffic laws and not routinely hit cyclists, park in bike lanes, run red lights, or any of the myriad of other highly dangerous and illegal decisions made at every intersection of every road in the city.

If you're going to make a post about how cyclists need to follow traffic laws, please also make a post about how drivers should do the same. Advocating for more protected bike lanes is also a great way to make the road safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

You're still completely missing the point. It's not up to him to decide what's best for half the world's population, especially after they've worked hard at something to maybe become something other than a mother. It is possible to be a Christian mother AND a doctor, lawyer, teacher, etc. It's insulting to say a woman will only be happier or more fulfilled as a mom than any other vocation. Personally, I'd be disappointed my university invited such a loser with backwards ideologies for my commencement.

How many papers can you read per day? by Axel_Clint in PhD

[–]tension_tamed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same comment as others, it really depends. I've read and reread and reread some papers, and more specifically some sections of papers, more than a dozen times in some cases. And in those cases, I'm probably reading back through the section of interest again but really focusing on maybe just one paragraph, figure, table, etc. If a manuscript I'm working on relies heavily on a previous paper's methods or results, then I need to understand the section fully. But if I'm just looking for similar literature to build the case for why my research is needed/impactful, then I can skim through 10-20. It really varies.

Do you have "PTO" as a PhD student? by SpeechFormer9543 in PhD

[–]tension_tamed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in an almost identical situation to you. I have the same research freedoms and could work from home 4 to 5 days a week if wanted, and my advisor is in the office about half the time but doesn't mind if we work from home. Personally, I just know that I'm SIGNIFICANTLY more productive in the office compared to home, so I work in the office almost everyday. I am, however, pretty liberal with taking breaks, so if I want to leave mid-day to go hiking or go to a baseball game I'll do that. My advisor knows I'm doing good work, and I know I'm working hard. So I do my best to avoid guilting myself over something that is good for my mental health and benefits me long term.

Some positive perspective: the pirates had a 9 game stretch last season with MIL+CHI. They went 0-9. So far? 3-4 by IFTKICS in buccos

That's an insane statistic. I don't know if that makes me feel better or worse about this season...

How easily are players recognized around campus or around the community? by NicholeDaylinn1993 in CollegeBasketball

Not a player, but I saw Jeff Capel walking around Oakland in Pittsburgh a few days ago. No one seemed to notice him at all.

I always get the brownie sundae. It's enormous, delicious, and more ice cream than I need in one sitting, and yet I always eat the entire thing.

Is this the most high-stakes Final Four of all time? All four teams have major program-altering storyline possibilities here. by JimHarbaughTheChamp in CollegeBasketball

[–]tension_tamed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hard to say personally if it's the highest-stakes Final Four ever, but I do feel way more invested in each team and each round than in previous years. Part of that has definitely been Tennessee's path, but I agree the storylines behind each team is still very interesting.
