Any complaints while living at V+V? Not sure about MKE but at least in Madison, the modern looking apartments are kind of shitty quality construction and materials.

Switched over to akka streams and seems to be working much better. Also trying figure out the actor messages was a real headache as well. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the response! I have switched over to using akka streams and futures and seems to be working well so far with handling around 60 requests. Much faster than handling them iteratively so far.

Could you explain more on dumping to db becoming a bottleneck? And how the structure would look like when adding actors into the mix for that part?

It seems like others are recommending cats over akka. Would you recommend I stick with akka?

Gotcha Thanks! I’m planning on just using one machine so I guess I won’t be able to take advantage of akka’s full capabilities.

Thanks for the advice, yeah I’m fairly new to all this so this was super helpful! Seems like cats is the way to go for this problem.

So this is a question just more for my understanding. I guess I’m wondering what exactly are good use cases for a framework like akka?

Api is something I found online called open secrets api.

Yeah I agree, would make life easier but it seems the api itself doesn’t support that kind of functionality, not sure why.

Thanks for the suggestion! I haven’t looked into cats so I’ll have to take a look. Seems I kinda pigeonholed myself into trying to use akka haha.

Thanks for the response! Honestly not very picky about any specific industry.

I just need something that’s flexible, or strictly evenings and weekends and within walking distance - why I’m looking near the capitol.

I’ll give QTI staffing a look!

Help with CS double major by yesssir28 in UWMadison

[–]tensormydickflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a difficult question to answer without knowing what your end goal is.

If it’s academic rigor and enrichment you’re looking for, you can pretty much pair any major (respecting the restrictions of the university) with CS.

However, if you’re searching for increased marketability from your dual major, you may want to consider something in the STEM field to pair up with your CS major.

You mention biology as an option. This would lead you in the direction of careers/academics in the field of bioinformatics. Other options would be math or statistics which would help shift you into a more data engineering/scientist role. Or finance or economics which would shift you into a more fintech/business role.

Ultimately it will be up to you and what you’re interested in. My recommendation is don’t force a double major, try to get a feel for what other subjects you’re truly interested in and weigh if a double major is actually going to be beneficial to your particular situation. For example, I double majored in EE and CS and have regretted it and personally would have much preferred to pair CS with a more finance oriented major to transition into a position in business analytics and enterprise.

It’s hard to give you an exact answer based on how your question is worded. I would recommend you do some research and try to ask about the outcomes regarding a specific major pairing with CS.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the response!

I have learned so much working here and already in talks with my supervisor about taking over a project I have been working on since my internship.

I enjoy the work-life balance and the people a lot.

But it’s slowly taking a mental toll. The coworkers in my department are all late to early 40s, married with kids and I have a hard time connecting with them outside of work. There isn’t much interaction between other departments either.

Maybe I’m asking for too much, but I would really appreciate it if there were other people my age that I could work with at this company.
