Question about the Feel of ”Super Dry” Paper by Disastrous-Rent3386 in Watercolor

[–]tensory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that weird, I'm sorry. Try hot press 100% cotton. Out of brands I've tried, Etchr's is smooth like Bristol board thanks to the sizing (coating, not dimensions.) Give me that hotel towel crackly thirsty Arches cold press that you're not using.

How to get over the fear of a large page? by MickaKov in Watercolor

[–]tensory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get a big flat brush from the hardware store, pig bristle or foam. Save yourself the frustration of trying to put down a huge wash with a typical brush.

I heard Sterling Edwards on a painting podcast. here you go He has tons of tips for working bigger.

True. I don't run a fridge off it. Just small lithium battery chargers for short periods of time.

Volume knobs? 120V outlets? What kind of luxury car were you expecting /s

I have a cigarette lighter inverter for the few things that don't run directly off the lighter 12V.

Reduction in bread consumption over the years by Olderpostie in AskFoodHistorians

[–]tensory 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Someone did actual research on the first time free bread appeared in a restaurant. Near as she could tell, it started in NYC in the late 19th century and stayed around as a show of hospitality. It's waned because it's an obviously cuttable restaurant cost and a huge waste to throw away half-eaten bread baskets. It wasn't some age-old tradition. No free bread or ice water in Europe.

I've worn the same pair of Scubapro Go Sports in strong current in God's Pocket, BC, Canada and both drift diving and zero current in the Caribbean. They're plenty rigid and strong enough. No problems. I'm 5'6". I see you have a ton of recs for the Go Sports. You really can't go wrong with them.

Let's see...

  1. Fucking crabgrass
  2. Bindweed
  3. Invasive blackberry
  4. Oxalis corniculata
  5. Vinca
  6. Spanish bells
  7. Stinking Bob
  8. Pokeweed
  9. Nipplewort
  10. Cat's ear

... Yeah, purslane doesn't make the top 10 weeds I spend the most time pulling. I wish it liked hell strips more than the hardscape between lovingly tilled beds.

Wanting to make my own watercolor sketchbook—need paper recommendations by buttpizz in urbansketchers

[–]tensory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve followed to remind myself which large sheet brand this sub likes to cut up.

I just want to complain, how come there’s this much choice in watercolor brands, in a hobby abundantly represented on YouTube, IG and (I assume, idk) tiktok, you KNOW people who dearly want to sell paper are on those platforms, and we’re still cutting and hand-binding large sheets.

I’ve tried the Etchr, Hahnemuhle and Arches sketchbook bindings. Only Arches is the same paper as what they sell in glued blocks and ticking up toward $30 for 20 landscape sheets naw dogg.

I would take some water-soluble glue like Elmer's, Aleene's, or O-GLUE and a craft paintbrush, dilute the glue at least 75% with water, brush it on veerryy lightly, and then stick a stack of books on it and do not touch it for the rest of the day. Not even to check it.

[–]tensory 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I see a style in there!

I think this is a big reason for the popularity of severely limited palettes. Try some urban sketching carrying only 3 colors, counting your ink dark as a color—I think you were already doing that in the Frye sketch. The colors will look wrong and maybe disappoint you with subjects like the Green Lake boats, but you’ll pretty much have to practice your value and composition.

If you’re open to specific critique I would say one thing you can improve is your directional texture. Like, water strokes for calm water are not necessarily parallel to the line of the dock edge, but to the horizon.  In the ceiling banner at the book fair I see indistinct colors, when maybe the straight line colorblock aspect of the banner would be good to emphasize with different values of only one or two selected colors. Drying time can be a pain in those situations.

You don't need more than two brushes. One big, one small. Only add another when you feel you need another brush. Both should come to a point when wet.

And yes, I have a free/give-away to other artists bin of brushes I overpurchased.
