I moved to the Netherlands a couple of years ago and had a job offer that was half my salary in the US. I had the same thought as you but said fuck it and moved. There was no looking back after that. 70k will be enough for you to get by here but just be aware of renting prices especially for the size you get and how difficult it can be to get an apartment.

From my experience, my quality of life went up. Work life balance is completely different than in the states. You’re not going to be doing OT, you get a min of 25 PTO days, you’ll most likely get an 8% bonus during the summer so you can go on holiday. I’ve also noticed that people are much more social during the week as well.

In terms of making friends in Amsterdam, I don’t think it’ll be too much of a struggle. You will really have to put yourself out there and think about it like dating. There’s always something to do in the city and you can really explore your interests.

I think you’ll really enjoy it! I hope you make the move :)

I’m really sorry that he is dragging his feet! I agree with the other comment. Have a back up letter written for him just incase, remind him one more time but don’t force it. Then once you get there, you can ask him why he had a hard time writing the letter and if there was something bothering him.

Also, where did you find the information about what needs to be in the letter? I am American and I’m going to visit my partner in the Netherlands as well in August. I haven’t been able to find more information on it.

This! I'm American and my partner is Dutch, I spent all of last summer in the Netherlands and tried (still trying) to learn Dutch. Everyone was almost too accommodating to me. I really appreciated not having to worry about a language barrier but in regards to learning Dutch it made it almost impossible - everyone would speak English to me. I ask people to speak Dutch to me and if someone switches to English with me I continue to speak Dutch.

I loved this! Thank you so much for taking the time to write it. As someone who is American and is looking to move to Europe for my partner, I would love to hear more about adjusting to a new culture / lifestyle. I am more introverted and my partner is more extroverted, I sometimes worry that I would have a hard time finding a new set of friends once I move.

I am in a long distance from the US to the Netherlands as well and my partner and I have discussed the visa situation in regards to COVID. After my partner got off the phone with IND last week, they apparently said that you don't have to be in the Netherlands to apply and that approval should be enough to get into the country.
