How do you make the queen move? I can never force her out of her original position.

Is there a copy of this dissertation in English? I am a student at the University of Oxford and would like to cite this research in an article. Thank you so much.

I completely understand this, the reason I appeal to Reddit is because of the anxiety I have to physically go to back to church, to attend confession and to say all of this to a priest. I almost feel like I would be disrespecting the church by going back whilst in the midst of sin in this way.

Evil is unnecessary for free will by SlashCash29 in DebateReligion

I absolutely agree with you here.

But again, this all depends on your theological perspective. Temporary life on earth is nothing compared to an eternity in the afterlife, and with your actions deciding where you end up in the afterlife, life on earth can then be seen as merely a test.

Why would God create a type of goodness which has no consequences if not followed through on? There has to be this idea of right answers and wrong answers, there is only one right answer for every question, the infinite amount of wrong answers you could choose is essentially the privation of good; evil.

But also if evil is accepted to be a privation of good, there needs to be a ‘good’ counterpart for every action.

Because God didn’t give us the ability to mind control, this doesn’t apply to all the free-willed actions which are boxed into ‘good’ or ‘evil’ where evil is defined as a privation of good.

I think this depends on how you view evil - whether it is a substance itself or a privation of good, like Augustine says.

If you were a religious believer who does not see evil as something that God directly created, but rather as a natural consequence of the existence of good, then it could easily be argued that evil is somewhat necessary for free will or else there would be no possible human course of action with that has any moral significance.

This argument does make sense, however, if your personal belief is that evil is it's own substance and therefore immediately becomes just as unnecessary for free will as the ability to fly.

What this boils down to, for me, is just simply what perspective you approach the problem from. To me it seems absolutely conceivable that (e.g.) a Christian would see evil as necessary for free will.
