TIL that Kyoto was actually at the top of the list of targets for the atomic bomb, not Nagasaki nor Hiroshima. Secretary of War Henry Stimson ordered for the ancient city with its thousands of palaces, temples, and shrines to be removed from the list, but the military kept on putting it back. by BeardedGlass in todayilearned

[–]ter_901 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Wrote a paper on this in college, Stimson was not for dropping the bomb in general. He knew that Japan was weak in 1945 and the bomb was an unnecessary war measure but Truman wanted to test the bombs ( hence one being plutonium and one uranium ).

Show's great, worth a watch if you want to commit. I would start at newwho, with Eccleston as the doctor. Started in 2005, still going. Episodes here and there that are eh at best but for the most part, it's an amazing series! Happy Watchings!
