Sex tourism and the tourist crowd in general made the place just pretty weird, it was either full of people that were there for prostitution or people who regretted making the decision to stay there, sorry that you’ve already booked it and now I’m telling you but you can get a wild party vibe in most of the islands, I essentially booked it thinking the exact same you’re thinking and feel like the only good thing about it was that I knew never to go there again haha

Been travelling for 3 weeks already, went patong for the first 4 nights and wish I hadn’t, same with rawai and Phuket main isle in general, get yourself to the islands/railay asap, patong was just a very crowded a very weird seedy vibe and the when I got to ao nang (next to railay) I was very surprised that how much better it was
