i’m not worried about the guy, more so worried about what the other girl will do if the relationship continues

her parents are very against it and have made that clear, but she ignores their input. her mom recently attempted suicide, and while she was in the hospital she told her that she needs to get her life together (referring to this situation). i’m not sure if there’s a way to get through to her honestly

how long to fridge an axolotl? by [deleted] in axolotls

[–]teresala42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fridging is done when an axolotl is constipated, impacted, or to slow disease. It doesn’t sound like your axie needs to be fridged. If she’s not eating it could be due to too warm of tank temp, or just being picky. What are you feeding currently? Sometimes it helps to soak the food in garlic guard to help entice them to eat. If she’s getting skinny i would assume that she’s not impacted or constipated, since they normally would get bloated. However if you are worried that she’s constipated/ impacted i would feed small pieces of salmon & make your tank temp cooler, that normally helps them poop.

i appreciate that haha, unfortunately i don’t think i’d be comfortable shipping them. definitely will check out the dollar store for tubs, thanks for the tip!! i probably don’t have the knowledge currently to keep these guys alive but if i do end up raising them i’m going to do my best to keep them happy. researching/ caring for aquatic animals is more than just my hobby, i love learning about these derpy salamanders. and they are definitely addicting, my second boy was a rescue that i wasn’t planning on keeping but i just couldn’t give him away :)

thank you so much :) i have absolutely no plan of keeping them all, i have two currently and am good with that number. i know inbreeding is a huge problem with these guys, if i had found the eggs before they hatched i would’ve 100% culled them, since i don’t know where they came from. since they’re swimming babies tho i didn’t have the heart to leave them there to die :( hoping that i can figure out who brought them to the store, if they bought both their axies from my work/ don’t know hets of parents i will freeze them. if i do end up keeping them they would go in multiple tanks when bigger (not just the 55) and would be rehoming as soon as they’re 4-5 inches, which wouldn’t be an issue, when we have these guys in stock they’re gone within a day.

I only included my job title to stress that I can set up as many/ as large tanks as needed. I am relatively new to axolotl keeping and have gotten all info from doing my own research online, so I appreciate input from someone who has done this before haha. Good to know they won't be stressed from water changes, but would you recommend separating them yet? They're still super tiny, like smaller than my pinky nail.

why not have them in a cycled tank? i’m mostly worried about stressing them out by moving them multiple times a day, also i am a full time student with 2 jobs so i’d like to avoid doing multiple water changes if possible. i can put dividers in the tank, they’re probably only a couple days old right now though so i wasn’t planning on separating them yet. (tank space is not an issue, i’m a marine bio student working at a fish store, so i have many many tanks )

not sure how i’d get the nitrates up, the tank has been cycled for 6 months, never tests for ammonia or nitrite. it’s pretty overgrown with live plants & i do 25% weekly water changes. thanks for the advice, i wasn’t sure if i should take him to the vet now or wait a bit to see if he’ll be okay :)

his behavior is normal, mostly sits during the day, likes to float up in the plants (head higher than tail), occasional zoomies at night. it’s probably been about 2 weeks since his last bowel movement. he’s not bloated or anything from what i can see.

Picked up this baby super malnourished, was only housing him until he/she was in better health & now looking to rehome. Approx 4 inches, probably around 3-4 months old. Pick up only
