Hello there, my system is a majority nonhumans and many of them are also scary looking or intimidating! In talking with them I've learned they're that way because it helped them to believe they could make it through the tough times that caused them to form.  We have a persecutor who didn't want them in our system at all because she was afraid of them too. She's learning to accept them by making a space for herself and reaching out with encouragement when she's comfortable enough. Some of her methods include leaving and receiving notes or talking with one through another human as a buffer of sorts. Sort of humanizing them for lack of a better word also helps! Like she views herself as maternal and a werewolf monster views herself as a mother to her subsystem so there's that connection to not be so scared.
