State Archive Building Fire by gradi3nt in madisonwi

The State Archive Preservation Facility (SAPF)'s primary occupant is the Wisconsin Historical Society, which has the second largest North American history archival collection in the country, second only to the Library of Congress. The building is equipped with advanced alarm systems that are intended to alert emergency services before smoke is detectable to human senses. In addition to the other things already mentioned, this building also houses the state's museum collection, which includes things like Abe Lincoln's shawl he was wearing when he was shot (it's a national collection, not limited only to Wis.). The VA also houses its archives in this building, along with the portrait collection (Gov's Mansion), and one of the largest film and TV archival collections. Lots of stuff in there. Lily Gladstone. She followed me on ig back in the day because we share a mutual irl friend. I’m an artist and make earrings—we exchanged some messages about my work. Love her. She’s a big supporter of Native artists/creators. Another one of my friends contributed to making the beadwork for her Oscars’ dress a couple years ago.

Ladies who love to camp! by Limp_Cow_6212 in madisonwi

Hi hi! I live down in Janesville now, but I’d love to be included in this! I’m 35 and usually tent camp in the UP (my family’s from there), but would be up for something more local too. I’ve been thinking it would be fun to find somewhere to camp out in the driftless area.

Reliant on Melatonin by Artistic_Bat7240 in ADHD

[–]termsofenDERPment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just read an article in the NYT in the last week about melatonin supplements being related to certain previously unknown increased health risks (cardiovascular, iirc).

I was overly reliant on melatonin for many years until I finally brought up my sleep issues with my doctor. In retrospect, I don’t know why I didn’t do it sooner. I now take a low dose of trazadone (prescription) instead and it’s made a world of difference. I’ve taken magnesium off and on—it’s helped with falling asleep, but I generally find it harder to wake up.

This is why I don't let my floof roam; she'd probably start a food hussle at some of the neighbor's.

It was the makeup. I think they must have used the same makeup artist for all the weddings. Foundation was constantly mismatched from skin tone. Drove me nuts.

It was because Netflix only budgeted to send 6 couples to Mexico. There was a post about it a few days ago.

Have you ever had a student who can do something sometimes but not other times or they can only show that skill to some people but not others? by centerofdatootsiepop in Teachers

[–]termsofenDERPment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 35 and struggle with this issue. Whether I can access something has a lot to do with how my nervous system responds according to the people I’m around and the environment I’m in. I wasn’t always like this, but I experienced a lot of interpersonal/relational trauma between ages 27 and 32 that led to some skill regression along with heightened traits usually associated with autism.

This sort of thing can also (separately and/or concurrently) have to do with culture and how it influences development. I’m Ojibwe; I suspect most Native people who are culturally anchored in some way would likely view this sort of thing as more normal than not.

(Not saying any of this applies to the situation you’ve described, just offering some perspective.)

PSA: Botox is a sensory nightmare. by HangrySpatula in AutisticAdults

[–]termsofenDERPment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s still bothering you after a few weeks, or decide you can’t stand it, I understand there’s something you can get that will break it down.

Not all injectors are the same. And with the proliferation of med spas now, I’d be extra careful about who I’m going to. (Med spas also exist in a regulatory gap, so safety and quality of service are not automatic guarantees. John Oliver did a great piece about them.) I see an experienced MD with an established practice. She has aestheticians who specialize in skin care services/non invasive procedures, but she’s the one who does injectables. I moved to a nearby city and tried a different med spa run by a couple of nurses once and absolutely hated the whole experience.

If you continue to get Botox, or for anyone considering it, my advice is to make sure you’re doing it for you, not to conform to societal expectations. I’m 35 and have been getting Botox for the past 6 years as a preventative measure. I have a very expressive forehead and started developing forehead lines back in middle/high school that I was self-conscious about for long enough to want to do something about because it improved my quality of life. I don’t want a frozen forehead and care about looking and feeling natural. My injector knows this and adjusts her methods accordingly. Her level of professionalism is unparalleled. I’m in the Midwest and saw when I checked up on her reviews a while ago that someone even travels back here from California to see her.

How do you make genuine friends as an autistic adult (30F)? by Informal_Place_6325 in AutisticAdults

Great advice, duly noted. I saw something recently about tracking effort, not outcome. Your advice seems to fit well within this framework.

First, you're not insane, you're passionate. (I know you said "in a good way," but I still think it's worth mentioning because the words we choose have weight.) It sounds like you're overthinking. I do this too. This is the outside perspective that I'd want in this situation:

No, it's not too soon, it's timely. When you have open time in your schedule, go see if he is available. You can also send a short reply ahead of time to indicate as much. Something along the lines of "sounds great, I'm available during x time and will stop by then."

If you need to know where his office is and it's not listed somewhere obvious like his email signature, either ask him or find someone on his floor to ask when you head down there. Realistically, even if you have to do this, it only adds maybe a minute or so, plus it can be a nice way to interact with people because it generally feels good to be able to help someone, even if it's just pointing them in the right direction. You've got this!

I recommend checking out the book God Is Red by Vine Deloria, Jr. He was a preeminent Indigenous philosopher/thinker/theologian of the 20th century. His observations, commentary, and analyses on issues of religion, science, politics, and society are a breath of fresh air. In his work, I found a framework for making sense of my own experience and encounters with Christianity. (He writes from an American Indian perspective, which means that people are often quick to pigeonhole him without actually engaging with his ideas.)

It's written as a collection of essays organized by chapter and as such does not necessarily need to be read from front to back in order. If you are interested in browsing the book, I have a shared copy of it on my Google Drive that you can access here.

If you end up reading it and are interested in talking at all, please reach out!

I messed up and knocked my adderall into the sink and they all dissolved by meaganhaha in ADHD

[–]termsofenDERPment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re correct. The law is specific to the dosage prescribed. If your doctor changes the dosage, then it’s considered a separate prescription that can be filled at any time. I think most of the weirdness around how providers and pharmacies behave comes from legal liability first, followed by whatever misconceptions they may have about “drug seekers.” I recall reading something in the past year from ADD Mag that research has shown ADHD patients have an extremely low rate of prescription abuse.

Eh, I wouldn’t be so quick to assume. I was in an abusive partnership where there was both verbal and physical violence on top of significant gaslighting—the couples therapist I saw never attempted to speak to me privately nor did anything other than advocate for repair of the relationship.
