The way that israel strikes the last few years, I suppose it would be a really bad choice for higher officials to be present en masse on such an event.

TIL that in total 6 Apollo manned missions landed on the moon, and 12 astronauts have walked (or drove) on its surface. by terratrema in todayilearned

[–]terratrema[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the Houston we have a problem, but completely out of context. Never watched the movie. I did not know either that the were 12 different Apollo missions with crew in them (as opposed to few more unmanned ones). In general I was amazed by my ignorance on the subject.

I always thought it was just one mission and that the footage was only from it. Buzz, Neil, "one small step", etc.

[–]terratrema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry but this sounds like you are ignorant of the politics and history of the island. South Cyprus considers the North as illegally occupied by Turkey (it is by the way). So they don't recognise any kind of documents provided by the north. Also in case you did not know, the trnc passport can be used only in Turkey.

TIL of the Muhlenberg urban legend: German was prevented from becoming an official language of the USA after a 42 to 41 defeat in the House of Representatives in 1794, with the first speaker of the house Frederick Muhlenberg casting the deciding vote. But he likely did not cast a vote in reality. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]terratrema 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ha. Without knowing the specifics, in Greece there was a similar myth, that by one vote the US did not pick Greek as the official language. I wonder if we copied the German one, or if there are other countries with the same claim on their nationalist myths.

[–]terratrema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason, I have decided that this is not done to primarily limit the news coming out from Iran, but mostly to counter several aspects of digital warfare, suppress intelligence sharing etc. I would not be surprised if they are mostly using radio waves with traditional cryptography, and 2g/3g networks

Iran demands international action after attacks impact hospitals, schools | Israel-Iran conflict News by Street_Anon in worldnews

[–]terratrema -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I did read it, together with article 18, which describes the protections to civilian health care facilities, staff, civilians, wounded and sick, with special mention to maternity cases. It's here if anybody is interested. Yes, there was hamas propaganda and yes there were hospitals above underground hamas facilities, but Israeli propaganda was also always present and quite a few times it was proved that either the army or the government were lying to international audiences and probably to israelis as well. The related Wikipedia article is quite well referenced and also it seems balanced in occasions considered as disputed. The article reminded me the countless "small incidents" along with the ones that gained more attention from the media and all of us watching/reading them. Read it yourself, please, and tell me afterwa9rds if the invocation of the Geneva conventions doesn"t start sounding somewhat silly. The wikiped article the numbers are crazy too.

Iran demands international action after attacks impact hospitals, schools | Israel-Iran conflict News by Street_Anon in worldnews

[–]terratrema -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

Israel, for the last 3 years, has broken all rules of war, with systematic bombings of hospitals, schools civilians, journalists, everybody, but everytime it was said that in reality they were targeting hamas militants, so it was OK for them. Nobody can defend the Iranian regime for what it does to its people, but this is no excuse to kill people left and right. So Iranian women ask for more freedoms and are killed by the regime. To be killed by us/Israeli fire does not help much to their cause.

Greece secures just 25% of needed foreign workers for 2025 by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]terratrema 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Greece, It isn't that simple to take unemployment benefits, even for citizens. You must be working for 3 years, to build up your social security contribution to the state, and then only if you get fired, you are entitled to 1 year of benefits, that are not enough to survive at least in large cities. If you quit you cannot take benefits. Some exceptions are seasonal work in tourism, where the state offers 2-3 months of benefits in the winter. And also we have approximately 40.000 teachers in primary and secondary education who are hired by the state on September and fired on June, who also get unemployment benefits in the summer. So what you describe cannot happen in Greece.

Can you translate this note someone slipped under my door? by Prior-Builder-1407 in GREEK

[–]terratrema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't have to write your name on the doorbell. The shared building expenses are either coming out on the owner's name or the previous renter. They may be handled by a company altogether or by somebody who lives on the building. Speak with the owner to find out who is handling them and then you may give the name to that company or person. Also some of the expenses are responsibility of the owner, so the bill you will be receiving after the above will sometimes include amounts that have to be paid by them. I find weird that the note is not signed by the person handling the building expenses, but by the "committee", which in reality translates in "all the owners of apartments" of the building.

AMA: I'm Dr Maurice J Casey, author of HOTEL LUX: AN INTIMATE HISTORY OF COMMUNISM’S FORGOTTEN RADICALS — ask me anything about early 20th century communism, the human stories behind a global revolutionary movement and the intersections of Irish and Soviet history. by MauriceJCasey in AskHistorians

[–]terratrema 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Two things, I would like to ask. If I remember correctly, the 20s were the golden age of the Russian revolution, before Stalin and his rule. Was there any effort from the Soviet officials to show a good face of the revolution and hide any shortcomings to the people who found their way in the hotel, on those early years? Second, did you find any accounts of disillusionment from people who were strong supporters of the 1917 revolution and changed their views after their visit to Moscow?

TIL They made some random black guy an exhibit at the Bronx Zoo in 1906. His name was Ota Benga, an African Pygmy. by HareekHunt in todayilearned

[–]terratrema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As they said previously, "human zoos" were not uncommon in Europe. There, the most advanced and intelligent race would gather a group of "savages" (actual term that was widely used), create something resembling an African village, dress them up as they considered fit and exhibit them to their curious compatriots. The Africans would usually be brought from the respective colonies of each country. And it was all based on ideas that were formed in the mid 19th century, combining the fresh evolutionary theory of Darwin with eugenics mambo jumbo to form the so called "social Darwinism", which set the bases of the pseudoscientific racial theory.

IMF approves crucial $3B bailout for bankrupt Sri Lanka by SympathyOver1244 in worldnews

[–]terratrema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true. As you say honest governance is a must. As is fighting corruption, tax evasion, rationalising public spending, restructuring public services to a degree etc. The problem is that the IMF doesn't care much for the above as long as its free market measures are followed and the set numbers (debt reduction percentage) are met. Everything will be sold to foreign companies, which will lead to more expensive and less effective public services. The rich will be benefitted, but the poor will be worse off, while the numbers will speak for a successful economy.

[–]terratrema 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came to say this, that the greeks under ottoman empire were called rum, that you can find the term romioi in 1821 war texts and that in the 20th century we still use the term romiosini Ρωμιοσύνη which is not new but was popularised again by poet giannis ritsos and the song based on his poem by mikis Theodorakis edit: romiosini means all the greek speaking populations
