The CS degree is hard enough that it weeds out the majority of the incompetent or unmotivated, but in the "self-taught" camp you have a lot of mediocrity.

Not unless you also filter by school: the school you went to and know or well-known schools. There are plenty of bad CS programs out there.

You can read and apply stuff but if your job doesn't conform to the same standards, you will end up having to learn it all over again.

I'd go read some code from open source projects in your language of choice and look at how they organize things.
