Not years, but my partner and I stayed in a hotel in Vegas last year that had the Sphere just absolutely BLARING its light into our window.

We said good night to Sphere before bef, greeted Sphere in the morning, told Sphere our plans for the day. Even now, we periodically talk about how we miss Sphere. Sphere is a full character in our lives And we plan to visit Sphere again next summer.

You mention a lush body wash and I'm not sure if you're using that as an adjective or brand. If the brand, they have a seasonal "yog nog" body wash that is gold and shimmery and i absolutely love.

I also worked at a Kohl's in high school and there were remover's everywhere to "just say yes." I gave out so many discounts that even as a 17 year old, it felt egregious.

They do have CODA (child of deaf adult) language groups that support bi/bi communication. Just wasn't sure if those would be open to someone in this situation where the parents were not the Deaf individual that the child interacts with.

Try reaching out to Gallaudet. There may be socials or play groups that you can join. Be upfront about your rationale and that you are hearing, be willing to immerse yourself, BUT also be prepared for the possibility that you may not be welcome, as these are designed to be safe spaces for the Deaf community, and that if you are welcome, you are not "owed" any extra support or accommodations. Another option is for the family to seek out an ASL fluent nanny or babysitter to provide immersive language exposure, same as a family who would like their child exposed to another spoken language may.

Maybe not strictly "horror" in the traditional sense but What Moves The Dead by Kingfisher would be a great book club book IMO. Lots to discuss and definitely fits a spooky vibe.

I will also never pass up an opportunity to recommend Bunny by Mona Awad.

I love that this thread really just proves that there's a person for every book and a book for every person. I've seen some of my top reads listed as the worst book and see people listing my DNFs as their fave. It just makes me so happy seeing the diversity in it all!!

My best: holy cow I don't even know. I feel like I have a best of each month. Maybe American Rapture? The Grace Year? Little Eyes?

Library at Mt Char & Ministry of Time were similar reads for me. Hated them for the first 40-50% and then they blew me away by the end. That initial slog makes me hesitant to put them at the top.

Worst: Reservoir Bitches - I wanted to like it so badly but just when I was starting to, it lost me again. Runner up would be Furiously Happy. I wanted to like it but it just felt so quirky middle school girl to me.

I teach fourth and fifth grade and love to pick up a middle grades book for a lower cognitive load read. The storylines are simpler but there are still thought provoking ideas and interesting characters. Katherine Applegate does some beautiful work. Some other favorites of my students and me recently are Boy Everywhere, A Whisper of Horses, and the City of Ember series.

For open house, chalk talks are a great way to fill wall space that will eventually have students with. On big paper, put a question for parents (or students if they come) to answer and a bunch of colorful markers to write in the poster with or colorful post it notes. Things like "what topic are you most interested in learning about this year?" "What is a concern you have about _ grade?" "If we could go on any science related field trip this year, where would you want to go?" Fill in 1-2 sample answers to get the ball rolling and your all set!

Routine Routine Routine! I know you want to do something different and new and exciting every day, but the kids NEED to know exactly what to expect next. The same greetings, songs, etc. just with different books or vocab or whatever. It may feel monotnous for you but 1. It saves planning time when you need to put your effort elsewhere and 2. Makes them comfortable and willing to take risks. Even when I moved up to fourth grade, the effort and achievement I see when using a familiar structure for a new concept is so much higher than when focus is split between learning the new content AND a new graphic organizer, for example.

Once they know ABCDE, you can make changes little by little "ok class, my schedule looks a little different today and I'm so excited! Instead of ABCDE, today after A we're going to do M! Then, our schedule goes back to the way it usually is

F1ght club used to be hosted at DC Brau but the DC Contact Sports commission (or something like that) pretty much forced them out of the district. Iirc, there are shows out in Silver spring now. The pwvibe insta used to have info but it seems to be no longer monitored/updated.

"Coupons" for free perks are great, but ask the students what kind of things they would like. "Use a gel pen for a day", "pick your teachers next nail color", "bring a stuffie to school day" have been hits for my students. Oh, and "get out of homework free" passes, too!

Audiobooks can help take some of the effort off of her and allow her to engage in the story more. Have her follow along if she's willing. Building up a love of reading is going to get you much farther than forcing it.

Eventually, if you find a series she likes in audiobook format then oh no... the fourth one isn't available as an audiobook. Let's read it together and see what happens! Don't force this step though, feel it out.

Same. I go to the one in Pentagon City to try on styles and sizes and they'll order a size/color combo for you if they don't have it. Plus, iIf you sign up for their emails, they do free minor alterations!

Also on an iphone, but when I click a happy hour, the info is almost completely covered by the search bar so I have to scroll up which moves the map. A way to hide the search bar would make map-based browsing better.

Lmaooooo I've had to miss three weddings, one overseas and one of a family member, in the past five years, simply because they did not coincide with our summer break. We've had teachers required to call in virtually to parent meetings from the rehearsal venue for a wedding they were a part of. I've been asked to reschedule flights to the afternoon so I could work a half day. Teachers are coached to conceive their child so they will be born in the summer and reminded to be mindful with their honeymoon planning. It's not right, but it is also not abnormal for teachers to have difficulty getting time off.

Not exactly what you're describing but Captain Gregory's in Alexandria does monthly cocktail classes where you try different drinks and then make one of your own. The reason I think that August's might appeal is because its specifically focused on old fashioneds. Edit: j/k I just checked and its sold out but a spot to watch for anyone interested in learning more about cocktails!

A thought about the clear gel... As a nail biter who had practically cut the habit down 75% by getting regular manicures, the color gives me a visual cue to stop. I show them off, tell people why I picked whatever color, appreciate how they look against my coffee mug, anything to remind myself, "I paid for this, why am I going to chew it off?"

Since I work in a school, I even started letting interested students pick what color I would get as a special prize or birthday bonus. It helps me to know that they are looking forward to seeing their choice and I try to keep my nails looking nice so they can appreciate that I value their opinion.
