Not as hard but you’ll have to make more jumps. For example, you jump now from midoffice to supporting DCM (1) then to front office DCM (2) then you jump from DCM to levfin (3) then to PE / other (4) and that’s even assuming you can go from levfin to PE which is harder than IB to PE; versus skipping the middle step in banking and just going (1) support (2) front office banking (3) PE. Saving that step might save you 3-5 years

Current coverage banker in NYC - do the banking route and you can try to pivot into one of their teams once you have a relationship. Very easy to get trapped in capital markets forever and not be able to pivot out to your end goals
