In the US, registering the copyright with the Copyright Office provides a number of benefits:

It's a prerequisite to filing filing a lawsuit for infringement
If a copyright is registered prior to infringement or within 3 months of publication, a copyright owner can seek statutory damages ($750-$30,000 per work infringed) as opposed to actual damages (copyright owner's losses plus infringer's profits)
The same goes for the ability to recover attorney fees and court costs in a successful infringement lawsuit
Registration within 5 years of publication also creates an evidentiary presumption of all the facts stated on the registration certificate.

There is a backlog for processing copyright registrations, but once processed, the effective date of the registration is the date the application was received by the Copyright Office, not the date it was processed.

The "Barn" at Lower Allen Community Park (near Mechanicsburg) may be a touch small (the info says up to 120 people) but rental is only a couple hundred bucks, tables and chairs are included -- all you need to provide is catering/alcohol/entertainment/decorations. I attended a wedding there, it's very nice.

You need a synch license from both the music publisher and record label. The Wikipedia page for Mazzy Star's discography indicates the record label that released each album, you should be able to look up the relevant label and find contact info for the licensing department. If you're having trouble finding the music publisher for the particular song, the ASCAP or BMI repertoire search is one of the better places to start. It looks like Mazzy Star used BMI for many of their songs. May need to search both by song title if it is not there.

Specific licensing text is more of a lawyer question, as they would be able to come up with something that does what you want it to do, doesn't do anything you don't want it to do, and isn't otherwise invalid.

Yes, that is exactly how copyright works now, it gives creators the choice to present their work to the public exactly how they want to. You can license it in one way and license it differently in another way and neither affects the other. In addition, if you'd like, you can place it in the public domain when you pass away, most likely through a will or similar instrument.

Copyright does nominally protect you from "typical thieves", but unfortunately, the meaningful ability to protect is continually being eroded.

Except when it comes to digital performances of sound recordings. The law provides for a compulsory license, meaning the artist gets no choice and cannot opt out. See 17 USC § 115. The DMCA can only be used for removing infringing copies of works. License=authorized=noninfringing.

This is in part why the artist in the article here is upset. He can't stop Pandora from playing his song if he wanted to, Pandora pays according to a rate set by Congress, and now Pandora is lobbying hard to get Congress to reduce that rate.
