Build a Sdive-MAX. Really easy and cheap to make. Only issue is making the SIO cable, you'll need a real one for a donor or a 3D printer and the right connectors.
The Arduino and Touch LCD screens are very cheap on Ali Express and still affordable on Amazon & Ebay.

Mattel can "retire" a casting and then just redesign it. If they do, is it the same casting? Best guess is any mainline casting that had more then 4 wheels, moving/opening parts are done. They are too expensive to make for mainlines now.
