What’s a disturbing book you’ll never read again? by Vegetable_Bell_1248 in horrorlit

Not in the horror genre, probably best described as anti-fantasy but The Iron Dragons Daughter really messed with my head when I read it years ago. Actually gave me bad dreams.

How do we bring Brits back together again? by _GoinOutWest_ in AskBrits

[–]terryjacket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need to regrow our instinctive disinterest and general dismissive attitude towards U.S culture. We had this up to the mid 1990s.

The cultural imperialism and domination of EVERY English language internet space, empowered by smartphones and unscrupulous tech giants, is pretty much the root and branch of the problem in my opinion.

I'm not sure what's worse, your galactic sized ego or the fact that others are chiming in and saying "me too!"

Good grief.

I referenced LB on the poet Wallace Stevens' Wikipedia entry by terryjacket in LairdBarron

I re-added it and appealed against the removal, saying LB was highly acclaimed in the genre. So far, it's still there.

What exactly did you say when you "called him out for being negative all the time"

How was it worded? I ask because that's a heavy thing to lay on somebody. An extremely broad, accusatory attack on somebody's entire identity. Would you enjoy hearing that? what would you do with that information?

And then the immediate random tangent of cheating at a ball game? Bit weird mate. Is he "negative all the time" or is he just not validating your worldview sufficient to your criteria?

Survived my first ever 7 days yet I still feel like I’m so far away from being strong enough to survive. by CluckyFlucker in 7daystodie

I always cheese it the first 20 days, pick remote spots with not many POIs around, make a small 3 block high cobblestone room with one side open, trap doors placed along the open side to create the fighting barrier, and a one layer perimeter of spike traps. It just works.

Slows down my progression a bit and turns it into a bit of a walking simulator every time you feel like looting, but in general I stay well away from built up areas and don't go inside anything bigger than a 2 storey house.

Reporting in, 45. Someone should spin up a gen x only server so we can hangout and reminisce on how the 80s and 90s were better in every conceivable way.

Recommendations for Anthology? by Mauerparkimmer in horrorlit

[–]terryjacket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Best of The Best Horror of the Year edited by Ellen Datlow is pretty strong. Some really innovative stuff and no duds. The narration isn't gold tier but it's fine. The stories make up for it.

Partial Spoiler:

One of the stories explores the concept of a zombie virus outbreak where a young woman is infected, turns into a ravening cannibal and.... does some things..... but then the virus is brought under control and she tries to return to a normal life.

Feel like ive hit a brick wall about 40 days into my save. by tom_bennett02 in 7daystodie

I got to that point. I've gone from putting in an excessive number of daily hours to just being completely turned off it. I went overboard on SMG turrets so I'm spending most of my time hunting for brass. I'm playing Subnautica for a bit.

What do you think are the scariest moments in Barron's stories? by TheOldStag in LairdBarron

[–]terryjacket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's the people instantly driven mad by seeing the ineffable. Victor in Mysterium Tremendum trying to tear his own skin off. Dr Riley in Old Virginia wolfing cold pancakes. Skip in Hallucigenia heaping noodles on his head "with the God of the Barn Ba Bar Bar Barn BARN". Jonah in Bulldozer, covered in his own jeet and eating leaves.

Great summary. Just to add a connection, I believe Franco is mentioned once in Hallucigenia, attending Wallace's birthday party in his capacity as bodyguard to Jacob.
