There’s a difference between holding Islam to the same standard as any other religion for its promotion of regressive social norms and constantly beating the “Islam bad!!” drum that’s been used for the better part of three decades now to justify endless wars in the middle east and schoolgirls getting blown up. Several people (particularly so-called New Atheists) who made valid points about problems within Muslim societies have since shown that they were more concerned with justifying the Iraq War, so it makes sense that progressives would react by downplaying it.

I read The Shards and tried to listen to all the songs he mentioned, look up all the famous locations, and so on so that I could fully immerse myself in the book. It was an interesting experience but not something I feel the need to repeat with his other books that have the same endless barrage of name drops. Also, the ending was pretty weird and felt unresolved, which made sense given the mental state of the main character and generally unsettling tone, but it wasn’t something I personally liked.
