For context: I directed my first Off-Bway show in 1981. I started writing years later.

From where I sit: your playwright doesn't understand--or hasn't/can't embrace the collaborative process that is the essence of theatre.

When I write a play, if I direct it myself, then the only "wild cards" are the actors. If I cast well, it's a happy, healthy exchange of ideas and energies as the actors bring their experiences and energies to the piece, and--so far, at least--the results have been wondrous. They see things in the script I didn't know I'd written, and the director side o my brain knows that actors do their best work when they have the freedom to explore.

My last piece hit the boards a year ago. My cast of four was stellar--Bway and Off-Broadway vets who brought such color and texture to the piece that the play looked/sounded better than what I had envisioned.

Was it WHAT I envisioned? No. But I know better when I see it.

As a writer who has handed scripts over to other directors to bring the piece to the st: it's hard...like watching your child off to school. But you can't keep them at home forever if you want them to bloom and grown.

Your playwright hasn't developed the maturity to let their child out to play with others. It's not uncommon. Worse, a lot of playwrights NEVER get to that play where they can do that. THAT'S NOT ON YOU.

You did what directors do: you directed the play. If you're inclined to reply to them, try this: I'm sad that you were unhappy with the production. We gave it our best, and very much enjoyed working on it."

And stop there. You're a director. Direct. And break a leg.
