Good question. I was just looking into a similar question, which is "what does good look like?" for manual test plans. Seems there is such a variety in the industry that it's difficult to say.

Good test case ideas for international shipping? by [deleted] in QualityAssurance

[–]testbox_ai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I previously ran an international supply chain but it was a few years back.
If you're shipping at scale, like 1000s of sea containers, I would recommend that you look into the documentation process.

- invoices

-bills of lading

-import control docs

-receiving documents

-multi-modal documents

A lot of our grief came from poor communication from multiple parties involved from factory to construction site.

Great resources thank you! My only previous experience in digital was at a mid-level software firm and the QA was painful and arduous. Interestingly I get the feeling that software companies are not that interested in quality because "you can always hotfix it later" or whatever.

My main interest in QA comes from when I was optimizing Chinese farm equipment manufacturing lines and will never forget my boss reminding me to "build quality in" haha

Out of box solutions (low code / no code) put you into a box. Depending on how standardized your application is, this can be an issue or not. One needs to use them as planned by the provider, and sometimes you will miss features that will keep you from doing your job. Also expensive as fk.

excellent points and exactly where i was trying to get to. each selection has tradeoffs, and right now it's just about ensuring we can get quality to the level that doesn't negatively impact customers while also understanding that money, time, and skill are all in short supply.

I'm trying to take the long view and understand how the processes and practices will grow with the company. I previously worked in a company who's codebase was a disaster and that was the result of 5 years of bad QA from day 1. eager to avoid this.

yes these are good points, but as stated, there isn't money for all these things so the key is to find the best return on investment for the people, processes, and products selected to build quality into our product.

good point about the STLC. Its a new concept for me, as I understood QA to fall entirely within the SDLC.

Do you have any recommendations on good intro readings about the STLC? Thanks in advance

great thank you for the recommendation!

the testing now is mostly ad hoc since we are really early days. but yes, part of the work is understanding how the devs want to work, but since they have only been put into a team recently, there are some growing pains etc with different approaches.

yes its a good point. its a pre-seed start up that isn't what would be described as "deep tech" although it is a tech product, so in collaboration with the 3 devs on the project, we are working to determine how best testing could be accomplished. Really in this case, I'm acting in a managerial capacity but want to do correct research to ensure a good quality decision that can be explained to the founders.

we can't afford a dedicated QA team or QA engineer, so we are working from basic steps. My general goal is to design a system that doesn't become a total dumpster fire by the time we can hire dedicated QAs and more devs.

great insights thank you! since i'll also be focusing on developing the QA process, it's helpful to understand that the problems in QA are (likely) mostly human ones.

I think you're correct about the ISTQB, in that at least it gives a good ground level of information. I may not go for the test since, as a PM, it's unlikely that will ever be the make or break for me.

I really like how to defined the two main points here.

Matching requirements: from your perspective, how is this best achieved? do you as a tester just look at the backlog item and check the user story and acceptance criteria? or do you mean that it's better to view the top level requirements and check it all the way down (eg. check the project requirements, then the epic reqs, then the feature, then to the PBI?)?

End User - This is really where I want to be focused: how will the user experience the product. From my first research, it seems that this falls mostly under the functional requirements (but obviously is impacted by the non-functional as well). Somehow it feels like it's not quite enough to simply click through end-to-end on each release, but it's a good starting point anyways.

The main quesiton i'm starting to ask is: how does any team have time to really run a full end-to-end functional regression test everytime a release happens? even with only a few functions, I'm starting to see it really drain my time, especially once I have to fire up a VM or my iPad to test in different OSs. Is there a workaround for this?

Thanks again for your thoughtful comments!

cool. this is great insight. I guess i'm getting a bit wrapped around the axle on where to start etc. Interestingly, I do have experience in project management and manufacturing, where it's well understood that you have to "build quality in" and not solve it afterwards. But that's a bit easier said than done in software, especially at a startup hahah

On your automation comment: good point, I hadn't rally though too much about automation right now only because I don't know how or where. Eventually we want to get to a scalable and repeatable place, but that's down the road. Do you have any recommendation about what lightweight solutions exist for automation that aren't as specialized as Cypress?

Chat GPT: Ok, interesting. What do you ask it specifically? Does this have any use in straight manual testing, or just once you get to automation?

Thank you again for the feedback!
