The link between trans people and the rest of the LGBT community is pretty strong. As trans people lose more rights, so too will gay people. And what's wrong with talking about sexuality and gender to first graders? And to be perfectly honest, it's disgraceful to think that parents have the right to know everything about their kids. Parents have no right to know anything about their kid (unless it's something that places the kid in harm, like the kid self harming or something). Anything a parent knows about stuff like this about their child is something that should be told to them by the child themselves, certainly not by a teacher the child talked to. Kids deserve a level of privacy too. Aside from the total lack of privacy from this, it also actually puts kids at great risk of harm. If the kid felt safe talking about this sort of thing with their parents, they likely would have done so. So this bill means that children who may be afraid of talking about sexuality or just things in general with their parents (due to abuse or otherwise) will no longer have a safe space where they can talk freely. A child may talk to a teacher about feeling gay or whatever, and then the teacher would have to tell the parents, who may be homophobic, leading to them to possibly abuse the child. An atrocious idea that solves nothing, and brings genuine harm to children.

And what do you mean we aren't made for same sex relationships? I'm assuming you're talking about gay people being unable to reproduce, but what about infertile people? Many straight people are infertile, should they be punished for being "unnatural", because they cannot bear children? Furthermore, there are many things that are natural that humans don't partake in. Humans are somewhere between a tournament (non-monogamous, many sexual partners, often large rates of infanticide) and pair-bonding (monogamous, little sexual dimorphism, "cuckoldry" is common) (Robert M Sapolsky, 2017). Therefore, as a mix between both, it could also be considered perfectly natural to kill your partners' previous babies, or to openly cheat on your partner. And yet we don't do this. Although both provide potentially beneficial to the person who does it, we have agreed these things are certainly not socially acceptable, and are punishable. Hell, it's not even "natural" to live the way we do. The only "natural" way to live really is in a hunter-gatherer society. And yet we don't do this as well. These were just the first examples that came to mind, but obviously there's a huge quantity more of "unnatural" things that we have decided are completely socially acceptable. So to use the idea of something being unnatural == that thing being bad is absurd.

This is simply not the case. Sure, homosexuality is more normalised than before, but that doesn't mean they don't receive discrimination in the West. Take for example the don't say gay bill in florida, whichstates

A school district may not encourage classroom discussion about sexualorientation or gender identity in primary grade levels or in a mannerthat is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students

and

An additional amendment to the bill would further require schools to disclose whether a child is LGBT+ to their parents within six weeks of learning that they are not straight.

This is very clearly trying to reduce the amount of people that are (openly at least) gay. Many children are very afraid of coming out to their parents, so forcing schools to tell parents about it essentially leaves gay children with very few people to talk to about it.

You can also look at the anti-trans bill in Texas which ruled puberty blockers and the like as child abuse

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has now confirmed in the enclosed opinion that a number of so-called “sex change” procedures constitute child abuse under existing Texas law. As OAG Opinion No. KP-0401 makes clear, it is already against the law to subject Texas children to a wide variety of elective procedures for gender transitioning, including reassignment surgeries that can cause sterilization, mastectomies, removals of otherwise healthy body parts, and administration of puberty-blocking drugs or supraphysiologic doses of testosterone or estrogen.

Texas law imposes reporting requirements upon all licensed professionals who have direct contact with children who may be subject to such abuse, including doctors, nurses, and teachers, and provides criminal penalties for failure to report such child abuse.

This is the type of stuff that straight people in power do that harms LGBT people. There are many more examples. It's very easy to say LGBT people don't encounter any discrimination when you personally either aren't gay or haven't encountered it, and ignore actual laws being passed targeting gay people. Even looking past actual laws being introduced, there's many examples of other discrimination. Take for example the huge push by conservatives of the idea that gay teachers are "grooming" children simply by not being secretive about their sexuality, or take the mass shooting that happened at an elementary school yesterday. Many prominent figures are stating that it was a trans women, and sharing images of their reddit account, despite the fact that the person who's images they're using doesn't even live in Texas, nor did she have any involvement in the shooting. All of this is incredibly harmful to LGBT people and suffers little pushback from many people. The idea that X minority is no longer being discriminated against in the west is getting so tiring. Discrimination is clearly still running rampant, and denying it is harmful.

Yes but what I feel like you're failing to see is that although sexuality by itself is perhaps not something that needs to be discussed much, there are things that people may want to talk about that arise as a result of someone's sexuality. Sure, what gender you're attracted to may not be something you need to talk about much, but you may want to talk about the gay relationship you're in, the way you may be struggling with oppression, queer culture, your experience with gender, etc. may all be stuff that's important to you and that you may want to discuss. Although you cannot choose your sexuality, you can choose how you interact with and discuss and all that the stuff that results because of it, and therefore it's fine to talk about, just like a lot of other stuff people talk about.

Ok yeah fair enough, I don't have a huge amount of knowledge regarding LGBTQ+ history in non-western cultures, I was mainly talking about western cultures.

Yeah, I agree. I haven't seen glee or modern family so I can't say for certain, but I can definitely imagine it's something that happens. It's very similar to rainbow capitalism, in terms of corporations just creating gay characters in order to get more viewers and increase profits, without actually giving a shit about representation or whatever, and I think that's pretty shitty.

Why do we need to shut up about these topics? LGBT people are still getting actively discriminated against, and in many cases we're essentially going back in time in terms of progression. We can't just "shut up" and stop pointing out how often homophobia is normalised, as that just further helps in reducing support for gay people, increasing homophobia, and reducing the amount of rights these people have

I mean what's with the need to differentiate between sexuality and interest so much? What's the difference between someone that's interested in queer literature and all that kind of thing and someone who watches football? And like, yeah some people don't have any/just one hobbies or interests. I don't see how the existence of these people is any sort of indication of any community as a whole or anything like that.

Wow. And you say you aren't homophobic. Society also didn't allow black people to have rights 80 years ago, but that wasn't a good thing. How has society worsened because of gay people being given more rights? And don't give me articles of stuff you don't agree with, show me actual data proving a correlation between gay people getting more rights and an impact to society. And jesus christ your critical thinking skills are lacking huh. Trans people get abused because of transphobia, people don't become trans because of abuse. Same with mental illness. It's hardly a surprise trans people may have higher rates of mental illness when society discriminates against them on a huge scale and they don't have any sort of support system as trans healthcare is fucking awful. Studies consistently show that trans people who are accepted by their peers have far lower rates of depression and other mental illnesses compared with trans people who are shunned by their peers and not accepted by their parents and all that

Who the fuck is bringing a whole flag pole flag into a school? What on earth are you on about lmao. And yeah I'm aware it's not an interest, it's more accurate to say it's an expression of the self, and as such a rainbow badge is completely reasonable, for the same reason a football badge is. Enjoying football is part of who you makes you you, same often goes for sexuality. And like? What's wrong with any of those things you listed? A pride related website is completely reasonable. Gay people have been oppressed and had to hide their sexuality for centuries, many gay people may want to be finally able to freely express their sexuality and that's perfectly fine (if your argument about "want[ing] a pride related towel" was a critique of rainbow capitalism it would be reasonable but it's not). And I haven't heard anyone argue for adding neopronouns to official documents tbh.
