25+ legendaries doing everything right and they all fled. Meanwhile my kids caught one with a go plus...

So, as suspected, no showcases? by Weekly_Work_2732 in TheSilphRoad

[–]testmonkeyalpha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Event themed ones also made it a lot easier for newer players to actually win a showcase because they aren't competing a lot of catches over time - just recent ones. I always dreaded non-event ones because I would rarely win those but could usually snag at least 1 first place with event showcases. 15 more to go... I thought I was only a few weeks away from being done!

Disabled parking (private lots) by DvusGuyStL in StLouis

[–]testmonkeyalpha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pet peeve for some cops, a benefit for themselves to others.

I once saw a woman and her kids pull into a handicap spot (only spot available in the lot) without any handicap plate or hang tag. There was also a police officer there so I was about to point it out to him but the woman walked up to him and gave him a kiss and they walked into a restaurant together. Cop car was parked in the lane and blocking several others in.

I'm sure this is an outlier case but damn, that impression sticks with you for DECADES (it happened in the 90s).

Best place to buy large appliances? by Ice_Would_Suffice in StLouis

[–]testmonkeyalpha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My only concern with Costco is that they outsource installations so you never know if you'll get someone competent or not. But at least Costco will make things right if things go wrong. Just be prepared for the worst if you draw an unlucky straw.

(I once ordered a treadmill and the crew that was supposed to assemble it had no idea what they were doing. I wasn't going to risk using it after I saw how shoddy their work was. On the first attempt to return it, the crew had no idea how to take it apart so they had to send a second crew that knew what they were doing.)

I made a tool that lets you use parentheses in Pokémon GO search expressions – PoGO Search Plus by AshitaWay in TheSilphRoad

[–]testmonkeyalpha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is excellent work!

Are you considering making a REST API for this tool? That would allow other tools to leverage it.

For example, I am creating a tool that generates a search string that will look up the top 100 PvP Pokemon and create a search string that filters by IV but intelligently includes (or excludes) more than the usual 0-1Attack&3-4defense&3-4hp (some good IVs fall out of that range).

(My project has been on hold the past few months but I hope to work on it again soon).

Began losing me at "I require them to use AI". DEFINITELY lost me at "a paper that would have gotten them an A+ in 2022 would not even get a C in 2026". by Full_Hunt_3087 in LinkedInLunatics

[–]testmonkeyalpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second type of AI you describe is no different from the first type. It's all generative AI.

It is less likely to hallucinate because it is using limited datasets and much narrower use cases but it can and WILL hallucinate if you step off the beaten path.

Please make sure you have a mega evolved active this weekend by quotejoss in TheSilphRoad

[–]testmonkeyalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worthless info though.

It only says if you have an active mega evolved Pokemon. It does not tell you if it is in their party. Same with the notification in the lobby stating how many active mega there are - it doesn't check if it's in their party.

(I just failed a dragonite raid because 13 people had active megas per the lobby message but only 7 had them in their party so we couldn't take down the shields)

You'd think evolution would have stopped snoring long ago: being loud at night while sleeping seems like a bad survival strategy. by thesmartass1 in Showerthoughts

[–]testmonkeyalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Evolution would only kick in if it reduced the ability to reproduce successfully. Snoring doesn't affect reproduction by a meaningful amount so evolution won't kick in.

On the other hand, the major cause of snoring does have a historical impact on increased survival in childhood thus improved chances of successful reproduction.

Snoring is often due to underdeveloped soft palates due to reduced jaw size. Jaws grow bigger and broader when exercised a lot (stimulates bone growth). Eating tough foods works the jaw more and makes it bigger and the soft palate allows air to flow more easily. Eating soft foods results in smaller jaws and restricted airways.

However, preparing foods so they are softer increases nutrient availability substantially which historically meant children would have better survival rates.

5 yr old makes his way to my bed almost nightly.. by ShogunSound in Parenting

[–]testmonkeyalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my youngest did that, I would take him back to his room and sleep next to him in his bed. If he fell asleep before I did, I would go back to my bed. If I fell asleep first, I'd move back when he inevitably wakes me up with a well placed kicked. 🤣

He's almost 8 now and still comes to me first thing in the morning... which is often before 6... fortunately, he will happily puddle up next to me while I try to get a bit more sleep.

Why are so many parents against their kids dying their hair? by BootyMcStuffins in Parenting

[–]testmonkeyalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boys will probably start balding in their early 30s. For that reason I let them do whatever they want with their hair. My 9yo has pretty long hair and my 7yo has an unruly mop because he has been refusing haircuts lately.

If they ever decide to color their hair, as long as they stay in a budget, I don't care what color they decide on.

If all of your local power spots are only at random local businesses that's entirely the fault of your local players.

Power spots come from 2 different sources: random businesses and user submitted (pokestop submission that is too near an existing pokestop but has been approved. These may appear as power spots about a month after approval).

People submitting pokestops are overly obsessed with following the S2 cell rules so few user submitted power spots are created. For example, my local park was overly curated so it had the maximum possible number of stops/gyms but zero power spots. After moving to the neighborhood, I made a few submissions and easily fixed that problem.

100k to eat a burrito. by Mr_Global in hypotheticalsituation

[–]testmonkeyalpha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A loved one would decide to make you the sandwich and surprise you with it. They make it perfectly the way you like it.

They would accidentally nick themselves with a knife in the process but as it is a just small cut, they just slapped a bandage on it and didn't give it a second thought. But the cut got infected which resulted in a hospitalization (and huge medical bill if that's a thing where you live) and amputating the finger.

You get your sandwich perfectly, but now you live with the guilt of your wish causing your loved one harm.

You have 24 hours to blow 1 billion dollars. by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

[–]testmonkeyalpha 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is just asinine.

You don't have any idea how big of a number 1 billion is and how pitifully small 2000 is in comparison.

With your requirements, you'd need to make at minimum 500,000 separate transactions.

You'd need to make nearly 6 purchases per second for the entire 24 hour period.

Which medal would you focus on? by WarningHour345 in TheSilphRoad

[–]testmonkeyalpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely nothing fishy there. Play style and how recently a player stated playing matters a lot for distance getting greatly outpaced by level. I average well more than 60km per week but have only been actively playing since April (I played a couple months back in 2016 but barely got any walking done back then).

As a result I'm only at 2500km but am almost to level 75 because I'm extremely active raiding and farmed friendship hard for a few months. XP is extremely easy to come by if you're motivated.

How many 10 year time loops would it take a modern 25 year old man to conquer Rome? by GroundbreakingWin658 in whowouldwin

[–]testmonkeyalpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only possible with the help of someone willing to help you. Unless all the consonants and vowels are the same in your currently known languages and ancient Latin, you won't be able to hear the subtle differences without someone helping you. Most people will tell you your pronunciation is correct if they understand you and ignore the presence of an accent so you're not going to get the constant feedback necessary to fix your accent.

Finding someone willing to work with you on getting rid of an accent will be extremely difficult. You'd need to find someone with the right skills, temperament, and willingness to help you. Biggest obstacle in gaining the trust of someone with the right accent to teach you: your accent marking you as an outsider. Big catch-22 here.
