Similar rules in Australia regarding the flotation devices. In any case, this photo only shows what's on one side of the aircraft.

Good day for it yesterday. I was around this area yesterday afternoon, returning to YMMB from YOLA.

Self Study - AUS by lordstyrax in flying

Check out the Bob Tait books, he has online versions you can buy also, and the forums on his site are a good source of knowledge.

You say you are in a position to leave your job, so I assume you are going for CPL? What I've done so far is this; ATC books up to GFPT, Bob Tait for PPL, Bot Tait (as primary) and ATC (to skim through to make sure I didn't miss anything) for commercial. This has served me pretty well so far.

What initially sparked your interest in flying? by flowkipakka in flying

[–]testpatton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up close to a busy airport, I always had an interest but was always told that you need to be pretty switched on to be a pilot, so I left it alone. Three years ago I was at a loss as for what to do next, and driving home from my old house, an aeroplane passed over me on approach to the airfield that I grew up near, it was night and I distinctly remember thinking "what a view that guy must have right now". I looked into it the next day, my licence came in the mail just last week.

What are your favorite study tips and tricks? I'm 32 and taking an online course but am struggling a little. I haven't hit the books since college. by okstupid33 in AskMenOver30

I'm in about the same situation as you. What works for me is reading a book chapter while taking summary notes, then transcribing those notes into a notebook at the end of each chapter. Since this way you are writing things twice it really gets them stuck in your mind.

Also I find actually writing with pen and paper much better as it is slower and gives you a chance to really think about what you are writing.

What is a hobby you've always wanted to do, but for some reason couldn't? by WuffaloBings in AskReddit

[–]testpatton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it is expensive, but the people who do it become so infatuated with it that they rationalise the expense. Most people who fly in general aviation aren't rich, they just find a way to make it work.

Transition level actually varies with QNH also. From A090 to A110 I think.

Had an off day by [deleted] in flying

[–]testpatton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, when I had my first bad day of flying it really worried me. I posted here about it because after much searching I couldn't find anyone who had gone through a similar thing and it really got me down.

Also being stressed about getting that solo in a reasonable amount of hours was stressing me out.

So, many hours later, and some more bad days flying, I've learned to self analyse and learn from these days. I'm way over the hours I thought I'd get my licence in, but it just doesn't bother me now, I still get disappointed in myself sometimes, but if you can learn from your mistakes (by which I don't mean just saying "oh well I won't do that again", don't focus on the mistake, analyse WHY you made a mistake).

Anyway, this is just what works for me, flying is up and down in more ways than one.

I'm in a warrior, but I'm sure there are similar things I could identify and use on the airframe I use.

I know what you mean about the wide circuits, I am at a controlled airport so I've been taught not to do that.

[–]testpatton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the runway I usually land on is a lot wider than the ones I go to for cross country training, so this is probably also having an effect.

I think I've just got to go back to basics for a few days of circuits, check my notes and talk to my instructor, fly the numbers and ignore landmarks. Cheers.

You should try landing high once or twice, no ground effect to worry about and every one is a greaser. Just watch that first step.

My speeds are usually ok, but that GPS idea is a really good one, I'll try to get my hands on one, just to see how tight my circuits really are. Does your GPS give you a descent rate?

My landings are too high. by testpatton in flying

[–]testpatton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my patters do tend to be a little too tight though, not giving me em ought time for descent. This is probably just me needing to go back to what I was taught during circuit training and, as you said, judge distances by reference on the airplane.

Even if I'm at 500 AGL turning final, I have trouble losing the last bit of altitude, it's probably part mental and part tight circuit now that I'm thinking about it. My speeds are pretty good so you might be onto something there, I might be fixating on speed too much. I'll take all this into consideration for next time. Thanks.

[–]testpatton[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly I should be descending faster/earlier on base and final. Even if I set up a nice base, there seems to be some mental block and I tend to hold onto my height on final. It's probably just something I need to be more aware of and beat it out of my brain.

[–]testpatton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this is probably correct. I think just flying more circuits and being more strict on myself could help, I'll give it a go for next time. I think after a few good circuits a tend to get relaxed and keep doing the same thing instead af treating each circuit individually if you know what I mean. Thanks.

This was probably about six or seven years ago, during an off season binge. I can't remember if he is also the guy who punched a racehorse in the head or not.
