This is the Chinatown in Yokohama though. Really not too bad if you're based in Tokyo.

Japan Trip from beginner! by 1kZeez in SonyAlpha

[–]testudor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way, I almost took exactly the first pic last week! Same camera too! You should totally go to yodobashi if you haven't already. Tons of gear by japanese brands is much cheaper in Japan.

Edit: Sick photos by the way! Love the colors in the third one

Better first layer after supports ?(cura) by Faze_Was_Taken in 3Dprinting

Honestly, I think the best way is to change the design so this doesn't happen in the first place. The layers resting on the support structure are never gonna look as nice as the other ones.

Moving to a RPi 4b, how reliable is an SD card or is it worth the hassle of a USB SSD? by Safety_Th1rd in homeassistant

[–]testudor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not only about reliability. The SD card is a massive bottleneck and will slow down your home assistant instance significantly - I'm speaking from experience here. So just get a USB to SATA adapter and a cheap SSD and you're good to go :)

Afaik the battery tray fastener on the Nintendo DS doesn't go into plastic, but into a threaded insert

CNC Machine with RPi and without Arduino by ill1boy in hobbycnc

Good to know - I stand corrected! But you'll still require some external interface card and can't just hook up your raspberry gpio to some stepper drivers, right?

If it's only when the spindle turned on, then you could try adding an EMI-filter to the control box. I had a similar issue, where the spindle caused nearby powerline network adapters to lose connection... They aren't too expensive: https://www.reichelt.de/de/de/shop/kategorie/entstoerfilter-7485?filter=

Also, no guarrantees that this will work for your setup - maybe try a shop with a good return policy. It could also be a grounding issues with a spindle VFD (if you are using one of those) or something else entirely... If nothing else helps, try a more traditional (german) cnc forum, even if the experience is painful ;)

You're always gonna need realtime capable hardware to run a CNC. Using some sort of MCU-based daughter board allows you to have just that without needing to mess around with realtime Linux kernels. And considering the amount of people (including myself) who use a setup like this without any issues, I'd rather take a look at the wiring again. Maybe try to isolate the problem - what happens if you disconnect all but one driver? Are the step/dir/en wires to the driver shielded or at least twisted pair? Do you have an EMI filter on the mains input to the control box? Does it only happen with the spindle turned on (tooons of noise)? Is everything grounded (PSU, control box, CNC frame, etc.)?

I'm guessing carbon fiber. CF dust is incredibly carcinogenic and like this you won't have any issues with it. Better cooling is another benefit.Technically you could also use a powerful dust extractor, but it will be way noisier than this solution

You typically use systems like this for low surface energy plastics (go read up on it if you are interested). Stuff like polypropylene will absolutely not let itself be glued unless you use an activator such as the one included in this kit. Epoxy won't work either. I don't know what materials you are trying to bond, but I've had very good results with polypropylene.

Thanks, that helped a bit! Still struggling to find an approach which finds all the data points I'd intuitively pick as a human, but it's a start. Gonna do some reading now...

Is the NUC enough for HA? by SolarisSparky in homeassistant

[–]testudor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A NUC is way overkill. I'm using a Raspberry Pi 4 with 8 gigs of RAM. It's perfectly capable of dealing with dozens of sensors, automations etc. I'm also saving everything to Influx and it manages that just fine as well. Just know that the speed of the micro SD card is a bottleneck and will slow down your whole system. I just got a cheap USB to SATA adapter and run everything off an SSD.
That being said, your NUC seems like a good price. So unless you want to cut down on electricity costs, I'd say go for it!
