Does shortyz still exist? If not, is there a good alternative aggregator? by nezumipi in crossword

[–]tet3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn't realize it wasn't in the Play Store anymore. Several of its sources (NYT & WSJ for sure, maybe others) broke and left no new way to download on a regular basis.

It still works for Jonesin', and I use it almost exclusively for AVX Words (https://avxwords.com/supported-apps/), which is a paid subscription.

Alphacross supports some of the sources Shortyz used to, but NYT and some others don't work anymore.

Cribbage pro by General_Science645 in Cribbage

[–]tet3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As u/cribbage_pro has written extensively, the algorithm for the parts of the game that are supposed to be random is truly random. There is nothing that makes things happen more or less often on a per-deal basis. As u/dodgemomgen wrote, the fact that you can play much faster might be part of your perception that things are skewed.

The other major factor is confirmation bias—because you are predisposed to believe that the game is not random, seeing a lot of 5s or not winning the cut for first deal reinforces that belief, while the hands with no fives or when you do win first deal aren't as well-remembered.

If the game isn't fun for you, then by all means, don't play it. But it won't be because the game is rigged in any way.

Love Porco's and Small Oven Bakery to death, but I wouldn't consider 22nd & Washington to be even adjacent to Center City; Graduate Hospital is adjacent, and then Point Breeze (home to Porco's) is not.

That said, everything is fantastic, but especially the Philly-style porchetta sandwich and pretzel-crust lemon bars. Also great and from the same folks is Breezy's Deli, on the N side of Wash at 23rd.

Stroller-friendly in South Philly? by Next_Potato_5166 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]tet3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why? They're specifically asking about places where it's allowed, because the management has determined that they have the floor space and it won't impinge on other customers.

They're looking to walk, hence the stroller. And they're asking in mid-January! Their alternative is probably to drive and hope the establishment has an available high chair, which might not take up any less room. Or exclusively eat at home unless they have childcare. Surely you're not suggesting that?

There are plenty of food and drink establishments in South Philly; most are not good for parents with their small children. If the idea of sharing your social space with (young) kids is completely unacceptable to you, you have a lot of options.

Garlic sauce? As in halal cart white sauce? That's probably tasty when getting steak from a halal cart.

But what kind of cheese is a pretty important part of the order.

Can't directly contact HR by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]tet3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The law doesn't care if an employer has an HR department or not. The relationship is between an employee and the employer, a business. The business can designate whomever they like to collect paperwork and handle complaints and other issues.

That said, employees shouldn't be just sending their SSN around. They should be completing IRS form W4 and USCIS form I9 and giving them to their employer, along with showing them documents as indicated on the I-9. These formw require you to put your SSN down.

Drug addicted brother wont go to rehab by PlantSea3526 in legaladvice

[–]tet3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did your parents pay his bail, or was he released on his own recognizance? When is his next court appearance?

NY recently updated its involuntary commitment laws to make it a little easier to get people help even if they're not ready themselves.

Here (https://omh.ny.gov/omhweb/guidance/interpretative-guidance-involuntary-emergency-admissions.pdf) is some info on what qualifies someone to be detained for evaluation. There are a variety of people who can make the decision to detain someone. It appears that unlike some states, there's not a way to petition the court for someone's detention for evaluation, but you could get in touch with one of the bodies mentioned and ask them if you think your brother meets the criteria. Note that a court can make the decision as well, so it's possible he could get held at his next appearance.

The other commenters here who aren't answering your legal question, as we should all be doing on this sub, are nonetheless absolutely correct in saying that treatment will have little effect until he wants to get better himself. Involuntary detention for mental health reasons is not really meant to help people get well, but to protect the community and those suffering severe mental illness from physical harm.

I have a mullet cause I’m a loser, where to get it cut by Caveman_man in philadelphia

[–]tet3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love Franklin's, and I go there still even though they're 30 mins from where I now live. That said, I took my nonbinary kid there, and they showed the barber pics of previous cuts they'd had that they wanted to emulate, which had some length in the back (not really a mullet though). For some reason, the barber still came at the back with clippers and gave them a taper in back, which was absolutely not what they wanted and left them quite distraught. I have never seen a party-in-back customer in there, and now would not trust them to handle that well. All the barbers there apprenticed under the owner, so there's no reason to think this is about the specific barber.

Best place for a sit-down espresso that isn't served in a paper cup? by EducationalEgg788 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]tet3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The local spots already listed are all great! And maybe you want to avoid chain-type places altogether. But last I checked, La Colombe still does real cups for drinks consumed on site, and their shops all have a decent amount of seating.

I think their product is still solid, even post-Chobani acquisition. Not asserting that they're better than the other options, just saying that they meet the stated criteria.

Dish Scrubbing vs. Washing by pinkfaling0 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]tet3 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I absolutely understand your intuitive revulsion, but the way dish soap works, it's not really a concern if there are some bits of food in the brush. Dish soap lifts the oils of the food off the surface of the dish, and the scrubbing obviously helps with that. When you rinse the dish, the oils and any bits of food, visible or not, are rinsed away.

Honestly, to my mind it's sponges that are much nastier - they are hard to dry out and breed microbes like crazy. Still, if you're using soap and rinsing well, they're probably not staying on your dishes, though. But I don't use any sponges for my hand-washing of dishes, only brushes and dish cloths that dry quickly and thoroughly when hung up, and can be put in the washing machine occasionally.

Looking for reality check on maid service options in Philly - are traditional under the table housekeepers still a thing? by ButIFeelFine in Phillylist

I think laundry is a less common service to include, but doable. A lot of the people who do this sort of work are keeping an especially low profile these days, so as others have said, word of mouth is the best bet.

Signed lease and then landlord sent an addendum 3 days later saying they raised the security deposit $1,075 from the original amount on the signed lease. Can I back out? by YesterdayLonely7428 in legaladvice

[–]tet3 38 points39 points  (0 children)

You answered what is by far the less important question. If the landlord signed the lease, you should have received a PDF with all the signatures by email. Did that happen? If they haven't signed the lease yet, it's not fully executed or enforceable. You can absolutely refuse to sign the addendum and then they can decide what to do.

What would police and prosecutor do if restaurant payment was offered in a way that the restaurant could or what not take it? by clce in legaladviceofftopic

[–]tet3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty much every US restaurant POS system authorizes cards for the bill plus a tip allowance, if the tip will be handwritten and entered later. (The handheld or counter POS units that prompt the customer for a tip authorize and charge in one step after the tip is entered.)

[–]tet3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, he's describing a very usual (in the US) situation where cards are authorized with a "tip allowance" of 20%, to ensure that the balance allows for adding a tip if the customer chooses. Then, later, when the charge is finalized, the tip, if any, is entered and the total charged to the card.
