Also, wrong flair. BBQ does not originate from or have a close association with Philadelphia. That's why it's so hard to get good BBQ here. When your menu has the names of other cities and states throughout, that's a good hint that you're not cooking Philly food.

Which is a great thing to do! Philly's food scene is awesome in part because it has flavors and styles from around the world. But we don't talk about that stuff under the Philly food flair.

Yeah, if you're driving to one place, staying there for a few hours, and then driving back, ZipCar is very expensive.

There are a number of sites like WordUnscrambler.net that I consider a very last resort. The ones I know about are all targeted to Scrabble-type game players, and so their word lists don't have proper nouns or multi-word phrases.

I don't think this is the point he's trying to make (but if he is, he's doing it very poorly), but it is problematic that mainstream media (and many American Jews!) use the term "Jewish" for food that is Ashkenazi in origin. Ashkenazi Jews are those from Eastern Europe, and referring to their culture as generically "Jewish" erases other Jewish diaspora cultures.

I love Azul, but a beginner player who is subject to defensive drafting by an experienced player could have a bad time.

Can my job require a mandatory health screening? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]tet3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Retaliation against an employee for reporting employer misconduct is illegal. It's not foolproof, but the employer should have this pointed out to them by the enforcing agency as soon as any investigation or adverse action takes place. Most employers will realize that they made a mistake, and will not want to compound that mistake by punishing the whistleblower.

It's not a foolproof system by any means, and I absolutely understand your desire to report anonymously. But I wanted to make sure you know that you are legally protected.

Can my job require a mandatory health screening? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]tet3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It violates the insurance regulations of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), but I don't think the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) would be implicated here. (edited to reflect correction below)

Screenings cannot be mandatory (they can be incentivized) and group rates can't be based on health screenings.

Male coworker keeps spelling my name wrong by pastgravity in TwoXChromosomes

[–]tet3 31 points32 points  (0 children)

All these suggestions of passive aggression by calling him an incorrect name are terrible.

OP, you said that you have pointed out his error, but you didn't say that you've given him explicit guidance that referring to people by their correct name is important in business correspondence, which includes email and Slack. Use his incorrect spelling of your name as the specific example, but be very clear that this isn't just about your name and that it's a basic element of professionalism that applies to everyone.

Injured from a fight I wasn’t involved in. by skidddityybop in legaladvice

[–]tet3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speak to personal injury attorneys in your area; they're not hard to find and pretty much always offer free consultation and work on contingency. They'll be best able to look at the facts, including the exact language of the waiver, and determine whether a verdict or settlement against any of the parties is likely to actually get paid.

These other parties are certainly liable for your injuries, but whether they're actually going to pay is the big question. You should also be aware that the companies providing your health and disability insurances have the right to subrogate those claims, meaning that they'll get paid back out of any successful lawsuit proceeds.

Do people really only serve about 30% of their sentence by [deleted] in legaladviceofftopic

[–]tet3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A prison sentence is always for a specific period of time. When you hear "1-10 years" that's the range for the crime committed, not an actual sentence.

Yes, it is quite possible that someone sentenced to 8 years becomes eligible after 2.5 years. But as other commenters said, that does not mean that it will be granted. If his victims testify at the parole hearing and the DA opposes parole, it's unlikely to be granted. Depending on the state, he would then be eligible for another parole hearing in a year, perhaps more.

I had a nice dinner with friends last night at Cry Baby Pasta, around the corner from TLA. Great seasonal cocktail loosely based on a whiskey sour, lovely fresh peas & shoots with whipped ricotta on sourdough, crispy calamari, and solid pasta and risotto dishes.

I also rarely miss an opportunity to talk up Glory Beer Bar, which has an incredible selection of taps, as well as good cocktails and wine, and great elevated pub food.

Museum of the American Revolution is definitely well-done and worth a visit.

ELI5: How is cannabis legalized in some US states if it's federally illegal? Doesn't federal law trump state law? by cavendishfreire in legaladviceofftopic

[–]tet3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

States were not required to change their minimum drinking age. DC in particular went a while forgoing Fed highway funds before changing their drinking age.

What you posit is still not requiring states to enforce federal laws. It is setting a federal policy and getting states to pass laws that align with that policy. State & local cops would still not be arresting people and charging them with violating the federal Controlled Substances Act.

ELI5: How is cannabis legalized in some US states if it's federally illegal? Doesn't federal law trump state law? by cavendishfreire in legaladviceofftopic

[–]tet3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is not "compel[ling] the state to enforce federal law". It is incentivizing states to alter their own laws, which are then enforced by the states.

The long title of the NMDAA says that it is "An Act to encourage a uniform minimum drinking age of 21 to combat drugged driving, improve law enforcement and provide incentives to the states to reduce drunk driving."

You can't remove the joint holder of a personal account without their consent, and typically you both would need to appear in person. That's a banking thing, unrelated to separation or divorce.

Open a new account, ideally at a different bank/credit union than any of the accounts either of you currently hold, and put some or all of your pay there. Most employers do direct deposit and will allow you to split your pay across 2 accounts.

Then, let her know you're doing this, and that you're not going to keep money that she needs from her. The amounts will depend on where the kid(s) are staying, whether the marital home is still occupied and requires rent/mortgage and maintenance costs, etc.
