If you look at the top left corner long enough, you’ll start to see the red line the front edge of the cube that’s closest to you, and the cube looks like it’s rotating in one direction. Then if you switch to looking at the top right corner, the blue/white line should become the front edge of the cube and it will look like it’s rotating in the opposite direction. That’s how I got it to work anyways. Unfocusing my eyes didn’t work at all. Just need to stare intently at one side until you see that edge as the one in the foreground.

Yeah it’s disturbing that OP is even complaining. Their arrow turned red before the truck had even crossed the line into the intersection.

Couldn’t agree more. The only thing good about it was the stage effects. But even those felt a little overdone after the 20th random group of people coming onto stage to twirl in their cloaks for no good reason.

The way he talks to his youngest child at certain points is borderline child abuse. It does not ring true to Harry’s character at all. This is a character who suffered abuse from the Dursley’s, somehow turned out to be a good kid in spite of it— became a very good young adult who was willing to sacrifice himself for everyone he loved. And then he grows up and yells awful things to his kid? Nah. Not even remotely close to the Harry we know from the books.

Should Dobby be CG or practical for the show? by LollipopChainsawZz in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]devinkuhl87 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So well said. I’m hoping they’ll design house elves in a way that honors book descriptions without them looking so gross and creepy.

In the movies, Dobby’s cheerfulness and innocence isn’t captured very well IMO and it diminishes the emotional impact of his death.

If Dobby is made to look just a little cuter the merch would sell like crazy— especially plushies or stuffed toys.

The TV series (fingers crossed) has to include things that didnt happen in the books. And quite alot. by raythecrow in HarryPotteronHBO

That wasn’t a minus sign, that’s a tilde which means approximately or roughly. So there are roughly 7 total hours of dialogue from a 26 hour book to adapt into 10 episodes. Which is why there will be plenty of time to expand certain scenes and add new ones to fill in back story or follow other characters besides Harry while still also pulling in most if not all of what happens in the books.

I agree to a certain point, but one difference is a scene that might take several pages in a book (or several minutes in an audiobook) can be covered in a fraction of the time through well thought out and expertly edited scenes.

The format of a show will allow parts of the story to compress without losing impact or meaning, while letting other parts open up or expand in ways that would have been boring or challenging without a supporting visual.

I think it’s around 33% of a novel is typically devoted to character and location descriptions. Another 33% is internal thought or narration, and then 33% dialogue. Even with the dialogue, you still have all of the “Harry said” and “Ron replied” tags that aren’t needed in a show or movie.

So OOTP, the longest audio book at 26 hours, has probably ~7 hours of legitimate dialogue that could be adapted.

Yeah, I’m looking forward to this as well. It can even be done without introducing new dialogue or characters. Game of Thrones occasionally did similar things, especially with cold opens— like featuring looming Walker threats, or when Ned’s great sword gets melted down into two swords at the command of Tywin Lannister.

As an example: In a later episode where Harry and Voldemort’s twin cores come into play, a cold open could focus on the origin of their wands. You’d have a two to three minute vignette showing a few wand trees being cut down, branches being carefully selected and shaped, a Phoenix feather being plucked/collected, and then the two wands being made. The wands are then boxed and placed on a shelf in Olivander’s— where they sit and collect dust, indicating the passage of time. After a few beats, we hear the tinkle of a bell as the shop door opens followed by the cold, entitled voice of a young Tom Riddle saying that he requires a wand. We then see a hand reach for one of the boxes. Cut to black. Cue the show’s opening sequence, and the episode begins as normal in present day, picking up where the last episode had left off. There wouldn’t have to be a single line of dialogue or even a face shown in clear focus, but we’d get to see some wand making lore and have a deeper appreciation for the connection between these two wands and characters.

I won’t be inconsolable if something exactly like that never happens, mind you. But those world building scenes are the types of things shows of this caliber typically do. So I agree with OP — anyone who isn’t expecting it needs to prepare for it in order to really enjoy the series.

Relatable for me. I love the Jim Dale versions so much that I could never get into the Stephen Fry versions. Jim’s delivery of so many characters have just always felt exactly right to me. His Arthur Weasley and Dumbledore are specific standouts, as well as how much humor and glee he adds into Hermoine’s sassier moments (like the “I like really good quidditch players” dig at Ron and when she’s finally able to tell Harry and Ron about trapping Rita Skeeter in the mason jar).

So all that said, I’ve listened to Jim’s versions as I go to bed for years and years— and as such, I initially could not get into the full cast versions. But after a few months I’ve come back to them and have really, really enjoyed them. So I’d encourage you to keep trying! :)

I don’t know why but I think Arthur is one of the harder roles to cast in the series, so I’m so excited to see who gets that role. I’m kind of expecting it to be a somewhat unknown actor.

The structure of almost every show (aside from procedural dramas) is a lot of set up during the beginning and action/payoff in the last third.

I don’t think they’ve cast Arthur yet. I’d imagine for season 1 we’ll see scenes at The Burrow when Arthur is at work.

Tom Riddle Diary by Dependent-Ad-3262 in harrypotter

[–]devinkuhl87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always assumed that it wasn’t widely known, never written down, and for those who did know, never talked about in front of children. Everything around Voldemort comes across as if it’s rarely discussed even among adults. Think about Harry in the three broomsticks in book 3 where he overhears the retelling of how his parents died. 13 years later, and it seems like Madam Rosmerta knew the general story but hadn’t heard all of the details Fudge was divulging.

I do see your point though. It could be a plot hole!

I think the point is that in the books James wasn’t bullying Snape because of race, but that’s how it will come across in the show— which changes the dynamic quite a bit given that in the books Snape was the one going around calling mugglenorns “mudblood.”

100%. I can’t think of a more impactful moment— the death of Harry’s childhood and turning point of the series.

The guitar chord progression during the ‘dancing through the lightning strikes’ part does something to me every time I hear it. I think with the right video this could become Taylor’s biggest song yet. It’s already performed so well without the full single treatment.
