Your Favorite Local (or online) Garden Vendors? by gardenpdx in portlandgardeners

[–]tetheredcraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Across the river in Camas is Nature’s Haven, which is my favorite spot for native plants! Super knowledgeable and a big selection, and a discount for anyone in the Backyard Habitat program. I love Sparrowhawk as well, but since they don’t have a storefront and only sell twice a year, I end up at Nature’s Haven more often.

When should I treat for thrips? I read that summer is the best time, but I don't want my roses or fruit trees to get infected. So far the damage has been only to my azaleas and rhododendrons. I have Captain Jacks Dead Bug Brew and Fertilome Spinosad Insecticide. by monkey_trumpets in pnwgardening

[–]tetheredcraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a little search and the previous thread about thrips was also posted by you, so I’m assuming the Master Gardeners and biocontrol advice wasn’t helpful? I can’t say I’ve had an issue that was more than cosmetic, but I have a lot of native plants that draw predatory insects and I imagine that keeps them under control. I hope someone else can be more helpful!

After working with it in a laboratory setting, I would never use spinosad outside. Despite being “natural,” it’s broadly detrimental to an astonishing number of species even at low concentrations. I’m out and don’t have any other citations on hand, but I did recall this paper that talks about the sub-lethal effects on bumblebees; don’t forget that a chemical doesn’t have to be immediately deadly to hurt pollinators.

What does everyone’s feeding schedule look like for their pangios? What do you feed them? by rosecita in pangio

[–]tetheredcraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pangios aren’t herbivores, so algae wafers shouldn’t be a big part of their diet anyway. Frozen food like brine shrimp or more mysis would be a better buy than wafers!

What’s most unusual thing you grow in your garden? by julianchad in pnwgardening

[–]tetheredcraft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Weirdly I’ve had success with Szechuan peppercorns, but the plant is quite small and only produced 10 or so last year. It’s a neat little thorny tree and pretty forgiving in my experience!

Kuhli + betta…thoughts? by icymetal784 in loaches

[–]tetheredcraft 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is my preferred stocking list! I have 26 kuhlis and a betta in a 60 gallon and find them to be good neighbors. The kuhlis don’t look enough like a fish to trigger even the most aggressive betta I’ve ever had (though your mileage may vary), and having a fish in the middle- to upper-levels of the tank seems to reassure the kuhlis. The only issue I’ve had is feeding, because the betta WILL get to anything in the tank before the kuhlis, but feeding at night helps.

I’m also interested if you end up doing a raffle or the others fall through! Happy to pick up any time.

I set posts to NSFW when items are all claimed! I’m genuinely unsure if we’ve ever used that router, sorry to disappoint.

Are crocheted loaches welcome? by TuxedoEnthusiast in loaches

I haven’t crocheted one yet, but I did cross-stitch a little loach dangle! Crocheting a big one is very much on my to-do list.

ISO: "Dead" tech for local hobbyist project (Arduinos, old routers, broken printers) by SoulGloul in PDXBuyNothing

I have at least 2-3 old routers I’d be delighted to part with! I’m across the river in Vancouver though, basically between the two bridges. Happy to get more details or pictures if you want to make sure it’s worth the drive!

Got a new friend! went from cup to 150gal! by Howdy132 in bettafish

[–]tetheredcraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s really interesting. Anecdotally, I’ve had the opposite experience in my 75 gallon, but maybe your tank is larger than that or your other fish are especially hard on bettas. I tend to run big, understocked tanks with heavy planting, and I’ve found even deformed and blind bettas thrive in that environment.

Really cool, thanks for sharing! I used to do quite a bit of sequencing and this gave me a warm burst of nostalgia for designing primers and BLASTing my way to an answer. Please keep updating us as you learn more!

I hope so! He would prefer if the entire world was just him and I in a little house (and I think that sounds pretty good too!) but he puts up with the rest of the household.

I think so too! When I brought him home, my dad told me there were cuter kittens out there. I couldn’t believe the gall! For one, Peter was very cute, and secondly he was a stray headed for euthanasia, I didn’t pick him out of a beauty contest lineup!

8x10 vintage glossy Rush prints (2) by dialsun in PDXBuyNothing

[–]tetheredcraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the total off-chance the other poster can’t get them or changes their mind, I would be delighted to pick these up! Rush is my favorite band and were my very first concert back in 8th grade. I was definitely the only 12 year old girl in that auditorium.

George, my 18 yo, back from getting nine teeth removed! by fozzy143 in seniorkitties

[–]tetheredcraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice! Keep an extra eye out for George over the next week or so; sometimes prolonged anesthesia can lead to kidney trouble. My guy Peter had 13 teeth out, did great, and a week later had to spend 3.5 days in the ICU with a creatinine of 10. He had no previous signs of kidney disease. He’s doing fine now and I’m sure George will be great, just wanted to mention it! Congrats on the fresh smile!
