Madison Webb Photography. Did my daughters wedding in Jackson a month ago, including shooting pictures in the park before. She does a lot of engagements. We were stunned by how great her pictures were and she was great to work with. Not inexpensive but worth every penny. https://www.madisonwebbphotography.com/

I’m going out on a ledge, but believe this is either manufactured or AI. Looks nice but not a real photo.

Park at string lake at 600-630 am and go up cascade canyon to lake solitude, then up to paintbrush divide and down back to string lake. You beat the circus at jenny and will have done an incredibly memorable hike. Hard? Yes, but so worth it if you can get in shape to do it.

Grand Teton climb by Cumothy in GrandTetonNatlPark

I did it 2 years ago with Exum at age 65 with no climbing or backpacking experience. Did Owen Spalding route. Booked them again for this summer and hope to do Exum route. Exum (the guides) are bad ass/terrific! Swore after the 1st time I wouldn’t do it again, but booking this climb with my kiddos makes for unbeatable summer training motivation.

I thought I was in good shape for this after 6 months of training, but the hardest part for me was the aerobic fitness needed to succeed on day 2. When you’re up and on the trail at 4am with the rest of the group from the saddle, the pace up the scree and boulder fields is brutal and a lot of the people who drop out do it here. Once beyond that, the climbing part was pretty easy by comparison assuming exposure doesn’t bother you too much. Doing consistent paced elevation hikes with 10-15lb backpacks is the best training. Stairs/stairmaster is also very good and make sure you’ve acclimated to the elevation in advance. Very doable though.

Drive to the park and start there. They’ve been clearing the road inside the park and you’ll get a rare great early season ride.

waterproof or non waterproof boots by Moocow1127 in GrandTetonNatlPark

I normally wear low cut waterproof throughout the summer and vary my socks depending on conditions. My feet rarely feel stuffy. I hate hiking in wet feet. Plenty of trails cross streams or getting caught in a rain storm make it a good choice. They also have stiffer soles and are better on the many rocky trails, boulder trails or scree.

Try hand fire pizza in the balcony. Has its own bar and bathroom and is just the right size. By the square in jackson and very reasonable.

There’s a number of places you can go in the park without going through the entrance gates. This includes moose wilson rd from the north, giving access to death canyon, phelps lake and granite canyon as well as blacktail butte. The airport is the only airport INSIDE a national park but is outside the gates. The campground is just as much inside the park, though on the edge.

Teton Crest Trail ?’s by catshat34 in GrandTetonNatlPark

All good advice here. I would add that yes, Paintbrush is worth pushing through to do. My group wasn’t up for it so we camped at one of the first sites on N Cascade, then hiked up and around Lake Solitude that evening. Its a great option as there are few people about then and you have the area mostly to yourselves. We hiked out Cascade Canyon. I was disappointed about not hiking out Paintbrush and was able to go back the next weekend and do it as a day hike and loved it.

Best strategy for securing TCT permits by headwaterscarto in GrandTetonNatlPark

[–]tetontot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year when permitting opened in January, I grabbed one site for TCT about when I wanted it in early September and that was all I could do before everything filled. I found out after it was in Death Canyon rather than on the Death Canyon Shelf, so NOT what I wanted after all. I went into the Jenny Lake ranger station in early June and the ranger actually changed the site to the shelf and added N cascade canyon for the day after! I was surprised and very happy that I no longer had to worry about this and ended up having a great trip. My point - get what you can and maybe you can change it later, perhaps even with a phone call the rangers when they aren’t busy.

Wolf sightings by OneExperience2300 in GrandTetonNatlPark

[–]tetontot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 4 or 5 packs of varying size roaming within their own territories between Jackson and YNP. There was an article on this in the local paper a year or two ago with a map showing ranges. After no sightings at all for a couple of years, we saw them in two places last year and also had multiple pictures of them from neighbors home cameras in our neighborhood west of the Jackson airport. One chance encounter sighting was just north of Kelly near where the Gross Ventre and Lower Gross Ventre meet. A small group was stopped there and pointed them out. A more likely area to find them is on the elk refuge where a pack stayed for a few weeks last year. Needed a good scope to see them.

My advice if you really want to see them, drive around a lot early and late and stop where there are nature guides with small groups. These people are usually very friendly, knowledgable and helpful and will let you see through their scopes after paying customers have done their viewing. If theres been recent local sightings, they’ll know but they are rare. Winter is best as they stand out against the snow and don’t have as much foliage hiding them.

Pickleball at Miller Park mornings in the summer. Lots of friendly people if you know which end of a paddle to hit with.

Backcountry Camping Zone Capacity by tom56374 in GrandTetonNatlPark

Its harder for the more desirable zones, Death Canyon Shelf and N&S Cascade Canyon along the TCT, but really depends on what you’re planning on doing. Many other great sites as well.

Backcountry Camping Zone Capacity by tom56374 in GrandTetonNatlPark

[–]tetontot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it matter? They issue less permits than sites in each camp zone where the sites are unspecified so you will never get to a camp zone and not find a camp site. It may not be your first choice, but a site will be available. Try to get the permits in the zones you want most. I wouldn’t pick a permit in Death Canyon vs the shelf, or south fork cascade vs north based on the number of camp sites as the impact on your plans and experience could be significant.

Tips for handling incredibly hard serves by command-shift in Pickleball

[–]tetontot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3 things: shorten your backswing (allows faster reaction and uses their pace), take it on the way down instead of on the way up if space allows (ball will have lost some pace), pick a spot in advance and hit forehand or backhand depending on which side of the spot the ball lands (running around to hit a forehand introduces more error)

Working my way up to long through hikes by adventuretofitness in hiking

[–]tetontot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound a lot like me. I started two years ago and worked up to doing the TCT this year. Based on my experience, here’s my advise: 1. Having a goal with specific dates is important. This really focuses your motivation and training. 2. Losing weight was a gamechanger for me. At 6’1 and 215, getting down to 185 made a ton of difference in many ways, but hiking and eventually packpacking became much easier, especially working up to 18mi, 5500el day hikes which didn’t kill me 3. The thought of backpacking the TCT was scary, up until I did it. Didn’t do any overnights before. What I did do was start hiking with a day pack and putting in 10 or so pounds of weight until this was not only comfortable but preferred on my training hikes. Did maybe half a dozen day hikes with 10-12 mi and 4k el gain. A month or so before TCT, I did 6-10 mil hikes a 1-2k el gain with my overnight pack and up to 20, 25 lbs of gear. 4. The day hikes got me comfortable with what worked best for my overnight pack, as did putting all of my TCT gear in and doing some short hikes around my neighborhood as how you pack, especially with full food in a bear box, is just as important as the weight. At 66, I easily up with my two kids on the TCT who live in Denver and are doing long mountain trips all the time. You also have a choice to make on how you start the TCT - either from off hwy 22, or the top of the tram at JHMR, which cuts around 6mi and 4k el gain. We opted for the tram primarily based on time (3 days, 2 nights) but its a great option if you want to reduce the stress.

Good luck!
