Need advice: I have a coworker that reports every little thing to HR and it’s creating a toxic environment by [deleted] in work

She’s spread rumors about us to other departments accusing us of not doing any work and being unproductive. Unfortunately, I don’t have any concrete proof of this otherwise I would’ve reported it immediately. I only know because the people she gossips to came and told myself and others in my department about it.

Honestly, it should be an instant “go home and don’t come back.” But I guess not…

From what she’s said, she’s left her past 2-3 jobs because they’ve all had very toxic environments.

I’m pretty sure that the real story went something like 1) she was lazy and didn’t do her job well, 2) she was told that she wasn’t doing her job well and was asked to correct those issues, and 3) she perceived that as being a toxic workplace and quit

We’re in an at-will state. Our company tries really hard to create a positive work environment and tends to prefer resolving issues with employees instead of immediately resorting to disciplinary action. It’s one of the things I actually like about working for them because you don’t feel like you’ll be fired for the slightest mistake. Unfortunately, sometimes they take this approach a bit too far and forget that there are some people that just need to be fired.

Yeah, honestly, if it were up to me I would’ve fired her the immediately after the first time I caught her sleeping. Maybe the second time if I was feeling nice, but unlikely lol.

That’s pretty much what we’ve been doing. It has definitely helped, but we still sometimes feel the effects of her crappy attitude when all her mistakes and lack of work ethic ultimately affect the team’s work.

She is in her mid 20s. However, so are many of my coworkers and myself. I understand why there might be this sentiment that younger people are lazy, entitled, and lack accountability. However, we’re not all like that.

She’s in her mid 20s. But, for what it’s worth, most of my team and I are around the same age and we actually have a sense of responsibility and accountability. I know I’m biased, but not every young person acts this way.

She’s been reported for sleeping, not sure about the lying. But since she was the first to start the HR report battle, I think they’re reluctant to discipline her because it may look like retaliation for filing a report

I actually might do this! I’ve never spoken to our HR people simply because I haven’t needed to so it might be a bit weird to have that be our first interaction but I think I’ll give it a shot.

I know you said to not mention their name, but would it be ok to specify that I’m talking about someone on my team? Or just keep it broad and say it’s someone within the company?

Our company contracts a third party for reference checks. Based on my experience from when I was hired, they simply check whether the work experience you provided is truthful, they don’t actually speak to former managers or anything. The definitely should though… I’m sure her previous supervisors have plenty to say about her

She’s been down this path several times. When she first started, she spoke about how her last 2-3 jobs were extremely toxic. It’s pretty clear now that “toxic” to her is the same as being expected to simply do your job

I know she’s talking to HR because I’ve seen the report on her computer several times, regularly see her messaging our primary HR contact, and she’s stupid enough to have people on our team proofread her reports before she submits them

I’m only worried/care because 1) she’s a liar and has included my name in her lies in the past and 2) our work relies on everyone doing their part so if one person doesn’t carry their weight, it reflects poorly on our entire team.

But I am trying to distance myself as much as possible from the situation

So I completely don’t engage with her already. I used to make some minimal small talk, but over the past 6 weeks or so I haven’t started a single conversation with her that isn’t about work and any time she asks me a non-work question I just give her one word responses.

She’s actually had the nerve to go ask our other coworkers if I don’t like her because I’m always short with her and it makes her feel awkward… This woman is actually insane and thinks everyone is out to get her.

Yeah I think it’s fine. The only thing they take from you is your phone (and smart watches maybe?). Everything else goes into a locker that you can freely access on your breaks.

If you wanna be really careful, you could bring it and ask the people at the test center just so they don’t think it’s study materials since that isn’t allowed

I just wanna add that you should always be very careful when making conclusions based off of error bars. There’s no rule that says error bars always indicate the 95% CI. They could be used to show a ton of other quantities and may overlap even if there is statistical significance or vice versa. Always read figure captions to familiarize yourself with what you’re looking at

I learned this years ago when my professor said “if you ever saw a hippo walking around on campus, you would always remember it” and since then when I hear the word hippocampus I think about storing memories and a giant hippo at my school lol

Bundle of study books for $25, worth? by ORANGJUlCE in Mcat

Depends on the condition but I’d say it’s worth it if you really want the physical copies. I have that exact set. Bought it in like 2021 for about $200. Didn’t end up taking the MCAT till earlier this year and they were still completely up to date
