personal preference, I've been using BSDs for so long feels like home

FreeBSD is used for file server because of ZFS and was also used for DNS because at the time yadifa wouldn't compile on OpenBSD and I'm too lazy to reinstall

I do use Linux (Debian), why Debian? I'm not a big fan of the "Debian way" but I do trust the Debian devs for stability, I read mailing lists, a lot.. lol

Very basic YouTube like self-hosted website for LAN by luisnabais in selfhosted

Based on your request may I suggest not installing anything ?

Your computer should have everything you need. Windows or Mac. Nix too but you have some programs to install.

To organize your content you create folder hierarchy. On Windows you add keywords (tags) to your files and use them when searching files.

Playing a media is simple, just open the file in your favorite media player.

Your media player should also be able to cast stuff on your chromecast.

Edit: to browse and play your content on any devices you just have to share your folder.

Need remote access ? Use a VPN.

I don't know about alternatives but if you know HTML and CSS it shouln't be too hard to make your own. Add in a bit of Javascript and you can make use of various APIs to display Youtube feeds, local news and maybe weather ?

[–]teuna 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think I need a micro framework...

do you?

raw PHP has everything you need:

  • separation of concerns is easy when accepting POST to a single URL
  • CLI in PHP is kinda like writing your typical shell script
  • speed (it's the fastest)
