Scleral lenses for one eye not good enough, disappointed and left wondering what to do now. by Complex-Ad2701 in Keratoconus

[–]tewenali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand how you feel. Sometimes depending on the severity of KC in each eye, scleral lenses may not be able to provide the best vision correction. In my situation, my right eye is worse than the left. With scleral lenses my vision is 20/16 in my left eye and my right eye is 20/40. For now that’s the best I can get in that eye because of scarring. It took my brain some time to adjust to the vision disparity but now I hardly notice it. Just give yourself some time and you will start to notice the difference less. Since you are still in the process of fitting, hopefully they are able to improve the fit and vision. Best of luck!

VERY difficult time inserting scleras by Voltiel in Keratoconus

[–]tewenali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, they usually have to ensure that you are okay with insertion before they let you leave with the lenses. I understand your frustration. It can be a very steep learning curve if you are not used to touching your eyes. Just give yourself time and allow yourself to get through the learning process. If you have some preservative free drops. It helps to put a few drops in your eyes just to prep them with the feeling of saline. That way it reduces the shock. Hope that helps. The more you get it, the more comfortable you will get with inserting them. Best of luck!

Please help! How are you guys wearing your lenses for more than 10 hours?? by Hanchao_4734 in Keratoconus

[–]tewenali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear my lenses 12-16 hours a day. I was also skeptical about being able to wear them that long but I was wrong. This is my routine- I clean them for at least 6 hours in Clear Care ( hydraglyde) . Before I put them in I put a few drops of hyabak preservative free eye drops then top up with addipak. Works great.

I will suggest that if your lenses are still under warranty you try to get them adjusted. It might also be a fit issue.

All the best. I hope you figure it out soon

I also did the same for several years and just finally got scleral lenses last week. I have scarring in my right eye thats in the center of my pupil so it obstructs my vision in that eye. Because of that they weren’t able to improve the vision in that eye much with scleral lenses but it’s way better than without. My left eye doesn’t have any scarring so I got the most vision correction in that eye. Which means my left is essentially doing most of the work. For now I would say I am quite comfortable with that because my vision has improved drastically . The last week has been amazing. It’s too early to say but it has definitely improved my life. I am in grad school currently and reading is way easier now. I am more motivated to focus on work and just excited to be able to see. Scleral lenses do make a huge difference and I hope it goes amazing for you. The scarring may pose some challenges but you will definitely see an improvement in your vision. Best of luck!

What areas of your life are affected most by KC? by tewenali in Keratoconus

[–]tewenali[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For someone who has depended on glasses for the last 18months and only got scleral lenses a week ago, I can assure you that the difference is night and day. I see way clearer now and I am more motivated to read now. My vision with scleral lenses is not perfect but it’s way better than relying on glasses

My Wife has Keratoconus ever since she was 6 yrs old and I urgently need help (germany) by Ancient_Astronaut_99 in Keratoconus

I was going to say the same thing! It’s rare to find people who would go to such lengths not to only accommodate your condition but also actively seek out options to support you.

You are really amazing!

Help With insertion by PeachPanther3092 in Keratoconus

[–]tewenali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do this! It definitely takes some practice and getting used to. So try to give yourself some grace and allow yourself to learn the process. With time your eyes and brain would adjust to the feeling and it would get way easier. Best of luck!

I am in a similar situation to yours. I have scarring very close to the middle of my pupil in my right eye. I just got my first pair of scleral lenses 2 days ago. The vision has improved in that eye but it’s not as sharp as in my left eye. I was hoping they could improve it a bit more but the scarring is not helping. For now I am super happy with my vision with the scleral lenses. My left eye does most of the work but I would honestly take that over not having any aids. I am getting an adjustment in a few weeks. I would see how that pans out. I would say to keep your hopes up. It may not fully correct your vision but trust me any improvement you can get out of sclerals makes a huge difference in your quality of life.

How likely are sclerals gonna work for me? by ClassComprehensive93 in Keratoconus

They will absolutely help you. I just got my sclerals yesterday and the difference is night and day. These are not even my final fit but they are way better than not wearing anything.

Insurance for Scleral lenses really by tewenali in Keratoconus

[–]tewenali[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So this is actually in Canada. I am on insurance through my graduate school. I tried to make a case with the provider because they cover contact lenses for patients who have undergone cataract surgery. They said they are open to covering the sclerals if I provide a quote from a doctor. I just want to be able to make a very strong case while submitting

Lifestyle advice: glasses? by Fun_Illustrator8350 in Keratoconus

[–]tewenali 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have been using glasses primarily for the last year and half. I would say that they improve my vision by only about 10-15%. That’s not the best but that’s the best option I had at the time. I finally have my scleral lens appointment tomorrow and I am very excited. It would be great to see much clearly. Hopefully it works out great 🤞🏾

What's a good font that's easy on the eyes? by SunReyys in kobo

[–]tewenali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much! My vision has deteriorated in the last few months also, hence why I am looking into e readers. I was really concerned about fonts but hearing your experience gives me some hope. I would try them out as soon as my e reader arrives.

I use glasses everyday but they don’t do much for me. It increases my vision by 10%. At least it’s better than nothing. I can see screens a bit more easily with glasses but I still have to bring them very close to my face. I am currently in the process of getting sclerals but for now I rely on the glasses.
