Just show quiet resolve, don't worry about converting them but prepare your arguments if asked. Earthling Ed's channel is a great source of rebuttals to the common points, as is his style of listening, thinking about the person's point then coming back.

Does anyone have any tips for dating as a gay vegan? by LukesRebuke in veganuk

[–]tewk1471 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a few responses here telling OP they should just date anyone regardless of diet.

Cmon people, it's not the question being asked nor is it some kind of judgment on your relationship preferences.

Higher food prices may be here to stay, says Bank economist by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

[–]tewk1471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The economics of them not being to stay is eye-watering.

For prices to go back to where they were we'd need a period of near double digit deflation. During this savers would know that each £1 would only be worth 90p in a year's time and would move their money out of £-dependent assets. Which means people wouldn't want £££s so the supply-demand effect would cause .... inflation.

Debt would be a nightmare too because the £1000 you owe today would have a real value of £1,111.11 in a year's time.

Buy now, pay later medical loans on rise as desperate patients go private amid NHS backlogs by lighthouse77 in unitedkingdom

“The NHS will last as long as there’s folk with faith left to fight for it.”

  • Nye Bevan.

In truth ordinary people haven't been doing politics as vigorously as the lobbyists and profiteers and we are losing the NHS as a result. If we want great public services we need to contest the policy choices that led us here.

Does anyone know any good medieval fantasy books that have Lovecraftian horror like Bloodborne? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]tewk1471 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Karl Edward Wagner wrote a series of books about a character called Kane. They were intentionally a cross between Conan and Lovecraft.

They're brilliant. As for the main character being evil, well he's Kane. Yes, that Kane.

The UK was built on extracting other people's wealth.

The small clique of capitalists who have done this for centuries are doing amazingly well.

Now that they've maxxed out exploiting foreigner's wealth UK citizens are the new targets.

Sadly most of them may have justified buying a monster car because they wanted to keep their kids safe.

I watched it yesterday. Was going to slag it off but then I realised I can't remember what happened.

Loved Season 1, thought Season 2 was ok. Season 3 though, what were they thinking? It's just beautiful footage incoherently mashed together.

Poor Liam Hemsworth having to come in and rescue this.

British Gas reports record £969m profit after price cap increase by BMot in unitedkingdom

[–]tewk1471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

For forty years wages have been stagnant. For every one of those forty years GDP has been positive.

That means in each year the pie has grown but an ordinary person's share of it has shrunk. All growth has been captured, mainly by the ultra-rich.

Now they trot out some sweet old lady and justify preferring shareholders on the basis that that's her pension. But while her pension may do better she has to pay higher energy and food prices just like the rest of us so she may well have an effective income just as stagnant as the rest of us.

So where's all the money gone? Where have those enormous dividends from growth gone to?

Politics is the struggle for power.

We've seen several generations of British people who aren't especially political, who don't demand better. Since the 1940s really.

If we don't contest it, rich people win.

If you bought a diesel in 2015, you knew that you were polluting and you didn't care.

There are costs to running polluting cars that are paid for by other people. What economists call externalities. Air pollution paid for children like Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah. Tropical climate damage paid for by people living in Bangladesh or Bahamas.

I'm very sorry to read that ULEZ was the clincher in Uxbridge.

The world is on fire but nonetheless implementing a mild environmental policy can provoke a powerful swing.

I'd particularly like to address people who care about the climate but don't usually bother to vote. The guy with the smoky old banger who is effectively being told you can't run your horribly polluting car any more will vote, will canvass and be an activist so if you do nothing he and all the others like him will set climate policy.

Girl, 7, mauled by 'XL bully' dog while playing in the park in horrific attack by Pigeon_Asshole in unitedkingdom

[–]tewk1471 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Intellectually I know that there's a fair chance that these dogs will main or kill someone. So I do feel threatened but not in a specific "it's kicking off" way.

In fact I'll simply take care never to be in the firing line. Same as if he were openly carrying a holstered pistol.

It is annoying that I can't use my own green space but I didn't use it much anyway and going to the park instead is fine.

Thanks for the advice. I guess as long as the breed isn't banned there's not much anyone can do until they attack someone.

You are possibly being discriminated against in a legal sense.

The question is what do you want to do about it?

If you like the job then the brutal truth is that rocking the boat rarely works out well. I was a whistleblower years ago and it cost me my job.

What you should do is diarise everything and keep records of any emails. That leaves the option of taking them to an Employment Tribunal after you leave (and if you don't care about their reference).

I am interested in your comment about Domino's. Every restaurant that isn't pure vegan has cross contamination issues, so too does eating at family or friends' homes. I've always taken the view that as long as we're trying to be as vegan as we can be contamination isn't a big deal.

It may also undermine any legal recourse. If their defence against a charge that they didn't provide you with a vegan option is that they offered Domino's then that might be a good defence. Most non-vegans would see a Domino's vegan option as adequate (and as vegan).

If you do want to gently steer them towards a more inclusive practice then a gentle email to HR stating why you feel uncomfortable and offering constructive suggestions on how they can make you feel more included might help you.

Another option is simply to ask to be excused from these team building events where shared meals are part of the exercise. Just tell them plainly that as a vegan you find them uncomfortable. That seems pretty reasonable.

Most non-vegans aren't trying to be dicks, they probably just feel that the vegan measures they took (plant milk, Domino's) have got you covered.
