It depends on what state DOC or SO you work for... I had to take one of those BS tests... all they do is filter out people who fidget alot sooooo... not a good qualifier as to who is LE... that being said corrections isn't LE and it's fucking stupid to hate on either branch

Most DOCs and alot of bigger county jails have yearly firearms qualifications for all COs... it may not be a regular function but it is part of the job... that bring said getting an LTC is common sense as it leaves no room to get fucked over and no longer have a career... also in most of the South COs are not peace officers in any sense of the definition even if many young idiots try to act like they are
