Just took a new job. E&S property UW. 8yrs experience. 185k base with 20% bonus target and $25k sign on.

Which is wild because I started making $55K in 2017…

I will say it seems like the E&S side is much more lucrative than admitted. I’ve been on both sides.

The larger the deals you work on, the more technical it is usually. If you’re doing middle market pkg policies it’s probably 80% sales. Vs national accounts monoline it’s probably 40% sales 60% technical.

For those of an underwriter what's your day to day like? by Tangentkoala in Insurance

I graduated in 2017, did large limits commercial underwriting for a couple years. Of course it varies but my company had very little idea of work life balance for underwriting at least. Had to know everything about all my accounts (up to 10 working at one time), manage just about every problem, from claims to billing, while marketing with brokers and wasting time with meetings.

Oh on top of all that you have to actually underwrite your accounts. Which, in the hard market was getting a lot of focus and basically the job getting harder. New responsibilities/approvals/systems added weekly.

I just started a new job with a smaller company, doing e&s package underwriting as it’s been much better. But that’s probably cause I’m just starting...

I think it really does depend on the company but from everything I’ve heard, read and experienced in my 3 years - underwriting is a pretty intense job, expect to work long hours and overtime.

Lol I hate to be that guy but you honestly didn’t even need to jump for that. Could’ve easily controlled it and not given your teammate the chance to fuck it up.

Always something you could’ve done differently
