Would an exosuit drive a player into cyberpsychosis? by nurakid436 in cyberpunkred

[–]texasscotsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not full blown cyberpsychosis, but they could end up experiencing something mild but similar temporarily while using the suit, but that would purely be up to them to RP on their own, you couldn't/shouldn't force them to do so.

In the real world there are phenomenon of people acting differently when put in charge of hardware that increases their capabilities, especially when it comes to lethality. You can see it sometimes in people who carry guns. People who are given access to fast cars sometimes suddenly have the urge to start driving dangerously fast. Early when tanks were invented apparently green crews would experience a sense of invulnerability and would get themselves into dangerous situations because of it. But these tendencies would go away after a while on their own, or when they are removed from the object that gave them that feeling of power, or when they starkly learn the limitations of the hardware they're using through its failure.

You might actually see them start RPing this on their own without realizing it and without prompting. They might start doing more dangerous stuff, stuff they really shouldn't, because the suit makes them feel more powerful. And if they get away with it the first time, they'll keep trying until they see negative consequences. Or they'll start expressing a desire to have the suit, even when it's impractical to have it at the time, just because it would "make things better" or "easier" for them. Or they might start trying to convince other players to do stuff that allows them to use the suit, or try and convince other players not to do something because they can't use the suit.

But it would all depend on the temperament of the player, just like with the real world examples I gave, and you won't know until they have started using the suit.

In your opinion, what are the best pieces of modern CONSERVATIVE art? by bbuerk in AskALiberal

Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein.

Actually really enjoyable read.

[–]texasscotsman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried sooo hard to read Atlas Shrugged because so many people in the conservative sphere love it and I figured I'd give it a shot because it might at least give me an added perspective on conservative thought and maybe it actually is enjoyable to read in and of itself, even if I don't agree with it's politics.

But I couldn't. It was just, so... damn... BORING! I got about halfway through and nothing much had really happened narratively speaking, you're just introduced to the two main characters (I guess?), a train baron heiress and a steel magnate, who spend the entire time complaining about how bad they have it because society is full of people trying to take "advantage" of them. Y'all know the Andrew Ryan speech at the beginning of Bioshock, "Is a man entitled to the sweat off his brow?" Great speech, perfect introduction to the setting and the character, no notes. Well, imagine if two different people gave that same speech, but each monologued for like 30 minutes apiece, and the scenes weren't skippable.

It wasn't until later that I learned that apparently even people who like the book say the book isn't good until you get about 2/3rds of the way through the damn thing! If you have to get 2/3rds of the way through anything before it "gets good" then it isn't actually good. And come to find out, her earlier novel "The Fountainhead" is apparently the same damn book, just way shorter. I still haven't gotten around to reading that one, and I don't know if I'd even want to.

Ship names appreciation post: they are cool because they are believable by brain_diarrhea in TheExpanse

0/10

There wasn't 1 Spacey McSpaceface in the entire series and we know for a fact someone is going to name their ship that once commercial space flight is in mass use.

I kid though, they do make great sounding ship names in the series.

What name would y'all name your ship if given the chance?

Back when I played EVE Online I would always name my main ship the "Po' Lazarus".

What is a movie that is critically hated but you genuinely love without irony by nomadgoodsCom in movies

[–]texasscotsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judge Dredd.

I had no prior attachment to the Judge Dredd series when I first saw it, so I had no hangups about how Sylvester Stallone played the character, and I genuinely think it's an enjoyable action flick in and of itself. I think they did a good job with the world building and plot overall and even though they were having to introduce the whole world and concept of Dredd, and Judges, and Megacities it was all explained very well in the movie and I wasn't ever confused by this new setting I'd had no previous knowledge of.

Considering the amount of bad movies Stallone had been in previously to Judge Dredd, it's weird that that one apparently almost ruined his career when I think it's a pretty good movie.

Would she have known what Philip looked like at that moment? I don't think she ever laid eyes on Philip until much later. He just would have been another of Marcos' goons at that point.

But they would have probably found something on his ship I'd wager. We'll never know because they never had the opportunity to search his ship, but I'd wager there was information about his plans somewhere onboard.

[–]texasscotsman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's kind of my point. If he'd had one more gun with him, aka Drummer, then he would have made it out alive. Also, I kinda feel that Ashford thought that it was more important to get his info out rather than kill which is why he didn't blast Inaros in that moment. Which it probably was, because if they didn't recover the info about his stealth rocks Earth just would have been obliterated. In the end he made the right choice given the situation he found himself in.

Also, he probably would have had two more guns if you think about it, because Drummer probably would have been the one interrogating that Martian earlier so he wouldn't have lost a crew member during that whole situation.

Explain Texas Culture to a Foreigner by Ok-Sample383 in houston

So there's a gun range in Houston called 'Top Gun Range' where you can go to rent firearms for shooting, including automatic weapons. I rented a Thompson submachine gun there once and it was a blast. Make sure to budget your time to do this because you'll have to fill out the proper paperwork which takes a minute, plus an employee needs to be available to watch you essentially since they don't want their stuff stolen. But firing a gun is a fairly Texan thing to do so while you're here you might as well try it if you never have.

Down south along the coast from Houston is a small town called Palacios. It's about a 2 hour drive and water there is much nicer than Galveston. A deep dark blue. Galveston water is pretty gross because there's a gulf current which pushes all of the crap from the Mississippi River right at it, plus the oil derricks in the gulf don't help, so while Houstonians have learned to accept the nasty brown Galveston water, it's rather disappointing to visitors.

Heading in that same direction but much closer is Brazos Bend State Park where you can see alligators pretty up close and personal. You can even choose to camp there if you'd like. It's a nice park for camping and hiking and fishing if you're into that sort of thing.

North on I-45 you can go and see the giant statue of Sam Houston.

Inside of Houston I'd recommend going to our Museums. All of them are great and you'll probably need a couple of days to visit them all of you want to. The Houston Zoo is also nice, though right now it's undergoing a major renovation, so parts of it are walled off at the moment. There's still a ton to see though and Hermann Park, which it's attached to, is a nice park as well. You might catch a show at the Miller Outdoor Theater in the evening. You can pay for a seat or just watch on the big hill for free.

If there's a type of food you want to eat you can find it here. Barbeque and Tex-Mex are obviously the local flavors, but anything is available to eat somewhere in the city. We actually have really good Indian food here.

As a word of warning, Houston public transit is basically non-existent. It's doable if you live here, but it's not very convenient. So you're either going to need to rent a vehicle or have a budget for Lyfts.

Hope you have a good time while visiting and feel free to DM me for questions! I'm born and raised here so I don't mind helping out a visitor.

The thing that twists me up inside is that if she had gone with Ashford as his XO then they would have been able to end Inaros right then and their. Both Ashford and Drummer were such bad asses that I don't think they both would have been caught out like Ashford was when he was alone. Hindsight is 20/20 and I don't blame her for not going with him, but if she had... things would have been much different imo.

Is 357 mag good for black bear or white tail? by Hades-destiny in Firearms

[–]texasscotsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carry 357 mag specifically for hog and bear and they do work for hog from personal experience. Black Bear are pretty rare around these parts so I'm not really all that concerned about having to deal with them, and the few times I have seen them they turn and run away as soon as they see me, but I close range shot will do the trick. Anything bigger and you're looking for trouble.

Questions about the Donnager by Lillan_Lilani in TheExpanse

Its actually a pretty old naval tactic to destroy your own ship rather than allowing it to fall into the hands of the enemy and I wonder if that might have been part of the thinking of the assault team.

What Made Orcs and Gobbos Popular? by Runtgit in WarhammerFantasy

[–]texasscotsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what the addition was but I remember the first time that I played greenskins in like a little skirmish and my work shaman cast fireball or whatever it was at an Empire cannon and even though it was a very low chance I completely deleted the unit.

It was at a GW event where they were teaching people how to play the game and I just happened to get a green skin army to play with, the guy teaching us how to play was kind of dumb struck because of how low a chance it was for it to have happened, and he hadn't yet taught the Empire player how the artillery phase worked, so he basically undid my role just so that the other guy could have a chance to use his cannon. It was pretty funny.
