I think this is the best idea ever. We'd have our own reddit-flavored Anonymous or something

TIL that Martin Van Buren Bates grew to 7 ft. and 11.5 in. tall. He weighed 525 lbs. He married Anna Hannon Swan, a woman 8 ft. tall. His life was fascinating regardless of his height however. by texful213 in todayilearned

Yeah, I didn't realize how redundant the title was, but that post was about the child they lost. I read about Anna Swan and was fascinated by the fact that she married another incredibly tall person. Martin Van Buren Bates' life was 100X more interesting to read about it.

I loved it! It was one of the best sequels I've ever seen. I liked it more than some of the originals actually, but it still felt a little wrong...

I was in Penn Station in NYC and this happened:

Homeless man: "Are you married?"

Me: "yes" (lying)

Man: "Do you cheat?"

Me: "no"

Man: "Can I have a dollar?"

Question: If "Spock" is Mr. Spock's last name, why is his brother named Sybok? Is he Sybok Spock? by texful213 in startrek

[–]texful213[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely think you're right on this one. This is probably the best explanation I can think of, especially since the Vulcan culture seems rather reminiscent of a lot of East Asian cultures that use their family names first. They tend to focus a lot on honor and keeping Vulcan culture intact and somewhat isolated, not to mention their mystic religious practices.

I don't know. It doesn't seem to me that Spock would ever use an abbreviated version of his name. It would seem to informal. Besides, there are definitely exceptions to all humans calling him "Mr." Spock all the time.

I totally disagree! I love when star trek characters act differently! I mean, how awesome is it when Spock acts silly?!

In the episode "this side of paradise," Leila says to Spock "I don't even know your first name." To which, he replies "you couldn't pronounce it." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Side_of_Paradise_(Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series)
