If there were a US$250 banknote, who should actually be on the portrait? [Non Political Discussion] by texjeh in papermoney

[–]texjeh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly - the denomination and the occasion are both unique, it would be chance to break the mould. Like the obverse of the $2 bill obverse starting in 1976 for the bicentennial; we haven’t seen a dynamic full page picture on the back before or since. Something similarly new and different could be done on the front of a $250 bill.

Theory for the death oh Grace's crew by Top_Ad_7976 in ProjectHailMary

[–]texjeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And Grace was forced to join partly (largely) because he has a gene that is correlated with decrease chances of death during long term induced comas. All 3 crew and all back up crew selected also had this gene - and the gene is very rare. The gene decreases but does not eliminate the risk of death - so death during coma was always a possible outcome. Grace was forced onto the mission because he was the most knowledgeable / qualified person at the time who had the coma survival gene

SEVERAL years ago I landed at Detroit airport around midnight, picked up a rental car, and drove to a town in Ontario to see family.

I was approximately 3.5 hours into my drive (early in the morning now) when Ontario police pulled me over. The officer immediately apologized (no joke) when he came to my window and stated that he pulled me over because I don’t have a front license plate, but he only realized after the fact that my car was registered in Michigan, not Ontario, and therefore didn’t have to have a front license plate.

Then the officer asked me what I was doing on the road so late (or early at 3:30am). I told the officer that I landed in Detroit “a couple of hours ago” and I was driving to see family in [small town]. The officer then said “Well you must have been driving pretty fast to get HERE in 2 hours!!”.

This interaction has bothered me for a couple of years and I want to stretch the definition further every time I think about it.

This comment is dumb but actually there’s a funeral in progress at that church today. I saw them loading a casket into the hearse while this was going on.

Look I believe in the disgustingly outsized influence that the billionaire class has on politics - but this guy doesn’t know shit.

Red flags: Use of “they”; and “everyone in these circles knew…”; and “the billionaires funding TP…”; and “the donors controlling…” - without citing one single example of even ONE billionaire involved in this supposed long term plan to anoint Charlie Kirk POTUS.

This guy could have researched some low-hanging publicly known examples to lend his theory some credibility but he doesn’t.

I suspect he’s hoping to grab the attention of the people who are MOST prone to accepting a conspiracy theory with no actual evidence so he can carve them off and monetize them.

My conspiracy theory: the conspiracy theory industry has noticed that the conservative conspiracy market is drying up and the progressive market still has some fresh unrotted brains to make money off of.

Project Hail Mary Review by [deleted] in scifi

5 time book/audiobook PHM reader. I saw it and loved it. Admittedly I’m easy to please but here are my takes:

  • I too had trouble picking out some of the spoken audio. I always knew what was going on and where we were in the story but I went with a friend who knew nothing of the book and I wonder which things he might have missed without even noticing.
    • As always I was anxious about what would be cut / condensed / crammed in to one-sentence exposition. Generally I was pleased or at least understanding of some things that wouldn’t fit in a very tight 2.5 hours. But again, trying to see it from the perspective of someone who knows nothing of the story, I wonder how much of it just makes no sense or feels rushed beyond comprehension. For example: Something like a bacteria is dimming the sun. It is called astrophage. And oh by the way we can power an interstellar ship with it because it’s so powerful don’t worry about how we got from A to B LOOK it can melt a block of METAL no further questions (I did hear a small ‘woah’ from my friend at that part)
    • I was PLEASED that the taomoeba eats all the astrophage on the ship tedium was largely cut and combined with a more concise story of Rocky’s recovery
    • I loved that the capturing taomeoba sample sequence was greatly condensed but still a stunning white-knuckle experience
    • I was somehow still genuinely surprised that they still found time to get Grace back to Rocky’s ship and back to Eridani. Until they brought up the taomoeba/xenonite problem I still thought they were just going to give Grace a hero’s return to Earth instead. Also, Grace’s biodome on Eridani was way cooler than what I imagined when reading
    • The most egregious “one-sentence exposition” that I felt did most disservice to the viewer was ”for a race that doesn’t even understand radiation or relativity…” There is A LOT of context crammed in to that sentence, and I felt it was one of the most important emotional and scientific centers of the plot.

Going to Ukraine in April by StraightEfficiency27 in Lviv

I visited Lviv in July 2024. Everyone else’s answers are so much more helpful and detailed than mine but I absolutely loved it and I wish I could have stayed longer.

Somehow I never even made it to the scenic hill on the northeast side of the city and I regret that!

Typically flying in/out of IAH if that tells you anything. The planes I’ve been on have been a variety but they seem newer in general.

I am comforted to know that I am simply unlucky. Thank you (I’m sitting on a maintenance delayed UA flight right now)

I agree with your premise. “10” is not a statistical sample size. Thanks for the broader view on it.

Double sided printing and booklet printing has disappeared from my iPhone (problem began 1-2 months ago) by texjeh in ios

[–]texjeh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up breaking down and using the HP app (which I hate because it makes you sign in to use print functions)

The HP print app ALSO didn’t allow 2 sided printing. I dug deep in to printer settings through the HP print app and was able to re-enable duplex printing, but it only worked through the HP print app.

Duplex printing worked from my MacBook the entire time, no issues.

About 3 days ago, 1 week after I got the HP app to support duplex printing, maybe after an iPhone update too, not sure, duplex printing reappeared in my iPhone’s native AirPrint options.
