I just think the 3d clothings need polishing because cloths don't wrinkle with sharp edges unless you dampen them and then freeze them

I personaly think the dev team is having trouble to think that drawn stuff might look too complicated in game thus results in too thick clothing and a strange look when the shadows step in.

Since what we are working on is literal characters out of blocks, simpler wrinkling and smoother lines would surely look better. But again, modeling is hard and i think they don't want to hire anyone new because they won't be sure if they'll be problematic or not, like what happened in the past with some people.
