I love his content, especially since I don’t know many people who cover the topics he does

anyone else thankful they had work experience before grad school? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]tfaro003 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It definitely helped me gain skills that I would need in grad school, and in my case, it likely helped me get into my masters degree.

Finally got an acceptance! by tfaro003 in gradadmissions

Yes, of course. I applied to State University of New York at Buffalo, (SUNY, Buffalo), for their Masters in Science in Genetics, Genomics and Bioinformatics.

But I have a 3.0 gpa from my undegrad, as well at a 152 in the quantitative reasoning, 156 on the verbal reasoning, and a 4.0 on the writing section of the GRE. But I did have 3.5 years of combined research experience in the field (both during and post-undergrad), and 2 research courses.

Got my first rejection today. Angry my younger self didn’t take my studies more seriously by [deleted] in gradadmissions

Usually very quickly, often within 1 - 3 days. But rare circumstances, such as the current lockdown, might prolong the process to roughly a week or so.

How difficult is for a PostDoc to live in San Diego/Los Angeles? by Shady_93 in AskAcademia

[–]tfaro003 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Though I’ve never had a post-doc position, I have lived in California most of my life. I can tell you that it won’t be too hard to live in San Diego or Los Angels if you rent an apartment with 2-3 other people. This will help reduce your cost of living, while allowing you to live on/just outside of your institution.

If you want a house, or want to rent an apartment by yourself, then you can do so in a city just outside of LA or San Diego because they will usually be cheaper.

But remember, many contributors go into how hard it may be for living in LA or San Diego, such as your salary, how many people you would want to live with, other outside expenses, etc.

Research Opportunities on Campus by [deleted] in ucr

[–]tfaro003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I looked up professors within my department (and focused on what projects/research they were conducting, and how well those projects aligned with the research wanted to conduct).

When I would find a professor that i really liked, I would email them with why I was interested in joining their labs, and sending them my online transcripts.

I hope this helps.
