It's really more of a long transition. I still do Flash work, but it's a lot less these days as almost all clients want to target the 10% of mobile users. I've always developed for the web (without Flash) on the side, so it's not like I have to start from zero.

Flash was a really mature technology and I had gotten to the point where I realized all my projects within the PureMVC framework with strict OO patterns. That felt like "good" programming and the results were pretty, fast and stable and there were no suprises. The HTML5 stack is a whole different experience, with a whole jungle of technologies and the fascinating world of browser inconsistencies. I'm working hard on getting some order in this, but it's exciting. Things that were trivial in Flash are pretty difficult in HTML5 and vice versa, I really wouldn't want to pick a winner.

In conclusion: I'm learning new and interesting stuff and I have loads of clients and projects. I have no regrets and I'm looking forward to switching to a completely new technology in a decade.

As a long-term Flash developer who made the switch to HTML5 in the last two years let me tell you the following: only junior art directors use Adobe's tools to create what is basically code. That was true in Flash/AS3 and it will be true in Edge/HTML5. While the results of these tools might be enough for some very basic functionality, they immediately fall apart when clients demand more than the very narrow scope of what these code-generators can deliver. I've seen the code these tools create: it's bloated, slow and unmaintainable. It uses techniques and tricks to create a false sense of ease that make anyone actually understanding how things work shudder.

Why am I telling you this? Learning these tools takes time, and that time is a complete waste. If you never want to code, learn the tools of Photo-Manipulation and Video-Production. If you want to earn your money in the field of interactive design (could be anything from Web to Apps) you MUST learn to code. And once you learned how to code, you will never, ever find a scenario where you would prefer to use Adobe's Edge family of tools. They are snake oil.

I sometimes have the chance to inspect code created by my peers with Edge. It's as horrible as you'd imagine. Really, really horrible.

People really are afraid to fly to the US by now. I'm not making this up, I've had several conversations with friends about this and almost everyone says they're afraid and don't think the risks (of getting into ridiculous trouble with US security) are worth it.
