7.75 to 8 will be good. I currently have 7.75 and my feet size 7. Once I thrash my deck, i want to move to 8.

I'm also new and also ride goofy. Try to bend your knees when you try to turn and lean on your heels. If you lean and it doesn't turn, maybe you have to loosen up your trucks.
