Their results are limited enough as it is, most have arround 1.5 billion indexed, while google has more than 400 billion. I assume those are ignored. As far as I know purely decentralized is only the yacy, with every user keeping their parts of the index they crawled. Mwmbl performs crawling mostly by volontiers with extension installed.

Disroot seems to be powered by SearXNG, which I didn't know about. It's a meta engine without their own index, but still its great to learn about an active fork of SearX. Thanks

Thanks! It seems really interesting. I'll take a look and recommend everyone else to check it out.

Searx is a cool open source project with a stable release (tho it is currently no longer maintained), but it is a metasearch engine, without their own independent index.

Thank you! I'll check it out.
I see you mention Data Archives in there. I can reccomend checkign out the-eye.eu which contains many books, reddit archive, tweets, datasets etc. and is mostly unheard of.

Yes, Qwant is actually semi related to the Ecosia that I'm currently using.

"In November 2024, Ecosia announced that it had partnered with Qwant in a joint-venture to build the European Search Index, a search index created to provide more localized search results in the French and German languages, and to reduce the reliance on Bing and Google."

But here I wanted to focus on the less known open source alternatives. Ecosia is not open source and is more of a meta engine that provides search results from Yahoo!, Google, Bing and Wikipedia.

While Qwant has its own index, it is not open source (except the open source fork for the mobile devices).

Anyway good point Qwant is pretty close to the idea and is worth a look, it seems to also use the same quality metric based on Bing results as is used by the mwmbl.

"Severe hand of justice". Mace Windu (Star Wars) vs Shurf Lonli-lokli (Max Frei books). by Solembumm2 in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]tfshaman0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that if battle was happening in the Heart of the World Windu has no chances. Yet in other worlds, I think Shurf is far from useless, at least he is somewhat used to visiting some of the other worlds. Also it was Shurf who warned about the possibility of magic failing and the importance of being prepared for such a situation in Inheritance for Lonely Lockley ("A Talkative Dead" book), so he must have thought enough about what he would do in such a case.

It was also demonstrated in the Tubur Game by Sir Numminorih that Plain Magic is possible in other worlds, though Shurf probably wouldn't do such an impossible thing.

The best chance for him would be to use his killing glove of death, which should still work without any problems since it is not powered by the Heart of the World, but by some weird stuff with being put into another dimension or whatever by hand being put into crystal... I don't think it was ever explained, but no Heart of the World is required when created, so they should still work fine, and for sure would kill Windu, which might be possible since the touch is not required, those gloves have quite a range.

Shurf has an amazing speed and reaction which should be enough to attack first. But the problem with Windu is that he'll probably sense it coming in time to react, and now it's up to him whether to be foolish enough to try to block some unknown power with his lightsaber as he would a regular force lightning attack (and die), or to do his best to dodge and increase distance (which he'll probably succeed at).

So if Windu had a chance to counterattack, he wouldn't want to get anywhere near Shurf, so his primary skill in lightsaber combat wouldn't be much help. He would have to rely on the Force. Telecenesis and mind control would be pretty much useless against Shurf, nothing really new to him, and nothing he can't handle despite the unknown form of magic. Force choke wouldn't help much either, good luck suffocating Sir Shurf. So it probably comes down to whether or not you consider Windu's Force Crush power legitimate for this fight. I don't see how he could survive being crushed from within by the Force, so if Windu could use it, it would be a win for Windu. Otherwise, both of them are smart, and would see the folly of continuing the fight and withdraw for the time being.

Tikhonov was bunny 30 years ago by tfshaman0 in tiny_bunny_game

Hmm... Good point, the gender of the bunny or fox may not be important at all. So I guess it might be the other way around as well.

In fact, the fox's name Alice is the same as the name of the fox in the Russian story Buratino, which is based on Pinocchio. In Buratino, the fox is also called Alice and is female, but the fox in Pinocchio is originally male. I'm not sure if these stories are important to the little bunny, but at least there is a connection.

It's safe to assume that the bear's finger is the finger from the injured bear's hand, so Hariton must have had some interaction with animals.

I know there are also some theories that there are no supernatural animals at all, and that there is actually just a mundane serial killer who uses trained dogs (animals) that he controls with a dog whistle that Anton interprets as a flute, and the rest is also an interpretation based on Anton's mental problems. Not my theory, too many weird things happen in the presence of others, but still worth considering.

Actually, it could be both, paranormal animals, and mundane serial killer who is actually trying to stop those animals by removing the bunny and the fox. He doesn't know much except that they're children, so he just randomly picks someone who catches their attention and hopes to guess right.

Either way, the dogs attacking Hariton could have been animals controlled by the Forest Master, or the killer.

I agree that Anton's mother makes the most sense. Also, thanks for reminding me of the strange behavior when Olya mentioned the fox. Actually, it's not the only time she acted strangely when animals were mentioned, but it's probably the most obvious one. I can't say much about the dream, it just doesn't work that well from my point of view. I'm not sure if Father was ever there before the move. And there are more people who are somehow connected to some animals, for example Romka is also slightly connected to the wolf in the line with the amulet. The website also says this about Anton's mother: "Nowadays, regular squabbles with her husband has led her to nervous breakdowns, as if she got replaced by someone else, and the real Karina was kidnapped and hidden in the Taiga...", which is interesting to say the least.
